Step 1 - backed up my game files for "Tropico 3 - AP"
Step 2 - upgraded my PC (cross fire, new Hard Drive etc)
Step 3 - Installed Windows 7 on a brand new Hard Drive
Step 4 - Installed "Tropico 3 - AP" verified my CD key
Step 5 - Pasted my saved games into the new saved games folder
Step 6 - Launched the game and...

All my progress is gone. What I mean is - all completed islands and achievements are gone. Sad

Can someone confirm that when you do a clean OS + new install of "Tropico 3 - AP" all your progress is gone, regardless of your saved game files?

The question is what you mean by "saved game files". Because those are literally just your saved games, not the game configuration, overall progress you made in the campaign or achievements you unlocked. These things are saved in different files, which are all saved within the 'Tropico 3' folder in %appdata%

I don't know which file stores what off the top of my head, but in case of doubt, why not backup/restore the entire folder?

Ok. I implemented a new system that works good enough:

1/ In the save games folder that "Tropico 3" uses (which by the way for most people can be tricky to get to show up in the first place since it is hidden) which is AppData/Roaming/Tropico 3/ExSaves create another sub-folder titled Islands Completed.

2/ Just before completing the island (mission) save the game (I use mission name, years and months in game for my save games ;i.e "Pilgrim Heaven - Aug 1960").
For example by August of 1966 it was clear that I'll complete the mission for "Bananas" in the next 20 seconds of playing. So saved and backed up into Islands Completed.

3/ Regularly back up the folder to external / flash usb disc

4/ In case you need to reinstall OS and Tropico 3 again for whatsoever reason, you only need to transfer the save files and play them out in five or less minutes to have all the points, achievements and progress restored, instead of playing everything from the scratch.

Alternatively, you can also just backup and restore %appdata%\Tropico 3\
