I'm having an issue in getting the game to work. I've set all graphics settings to low to make up for a ATI 3400 graphics card, have updated everything I can think of have reinstalled several times, turned off firewalls and before you ask I have already sacrificed a fatted calf in an attempt to appease my computer, none of this has helped. No matter the game type I try the loading screen will continue indefinitely (the one with all the quotes and all).

Help please!

Well, that's not really a crash, just the game cannot locate the map folder.
Please check if you have "Maps" folder at all in the game installation directory. There is a similar issue reported here: http://forum.kalypsomedia.com/showthread.php?tid=12031
Try to install the game in a different directory.

Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone could shed any light as to why why Tropico keeps crashing?

Poor_Sunyol, do you have a DMP file with the same name as the crash file? Because, for some inexplicable reason, the crash handler was unable to register any useful information in the log. The useful information in the crash files begins with the label "Exception information". Also please make sure that you've followed the debugging steps described in the beginning of this thread. Your game's version number is way behind the last update.

Both crashes appeared random to me but I should note the game was alt+tabbed at least once before the crash occured (may be related and may not be).

I just bought Tropico 4 from steam and it isn`t working. As soon as i click on "Play Tropico" the game crashes. I hope you guys can find a way to fix this. I`ve been a huge fan of tropico since the first game. Here is the crash report:

Bought Tropico 4 from retail and now it crashes at start up right after clicking play tropico 4 in launcher. My computer passes all the reguirements set by Can you run it and I've tried everything in the OP. Also tried reinstalling various times at different locations.

EDIT: for that "DX9-compatible video card with a recent driver to play this game" part I've looked into threads in Tropico 3 section and tried using cmd line and disabled screen scaling when DPI values are high but no gain. T4 is aonly game that whines about not having DX compatible card.

My game always crashes after I build the space program and when the video is supposed to play that shows the rocket taking off. The only time this hasn't happened is in the campaign where its a requirement. But whenever I build one in sandbox mode the game crashes to desktop and says that an unexpected error has occurred.

You are not helping here. Both of those links lead to dead ends without real results. I am extremely disappointed that Nvidia keeps being made the culprit here. I just downloaded the brand new Nvidia beta drivers and STILL get this issue. My purchase of Tropico 4 seems to be a huge waste of money at this point.

Also it's not 100% reproducible. You may try to use different graphics settings when going through the cinematic :/

In the first case the problem was resolved by rolling back the driver and not by downloading the next beta release. In the second case the steam in-game overlay was disabled which also helped to resolve the problem. Sorry but as long as the problem is being resolved we aren't going to investigate it, especially if it's happening in a third party module.

I just bought the game and i keep crashing after 3-5 minutes into the game now. I could play the first 40 minutes of the first campaign map of Modern age, but now i keep crashing just afew minutes after i started it.
Please help, i paid alot of money for this game and i cant even play it..

Malphai, there is not enough information in your log. You'll have to provide a complete log (if it's too long, post a link to it or send it as a PM).

You may try the following:
Turn off completely the Asus overclocking.
Turn off the Steam in-game overlay.
Do the steps described in the beginning of this thread.

If the game is still crashing please provide a dump file.

I've sent a PM message to you Svetlio with the entire logfile, can you help me find the problem?

Even if it did work, I play other games besides Tropico which new drivers are released to address their issues so this is not an ideal situation.
I don't work for the industry but my understanding is some work with Nvidia on your part would help to fix the problem in their next driver release. Can you imagine if Diablo III came out next week games were crashing and their fix was to tell everyone to load older drivers? That's just ridiculous. If you are not going to investigate an issue due to the problem having to do with Nvidia drivers then other people should be made aware of the problem if they own Nvidia cards.

2) My copy was not purchased from Steam, and I don't have an in-game overlay.

It appears that supporting the game post release is really not something Kalypso takes seriously. I'll be sure to post the bug on the Steam forums so Nvidia card owners do not make the same mistake I did and purchase it with this weekends special. It's a shame because it's a fun game I have enjoyed since the original Tropico.

Please excuse my absent-mindedness, but why are you assuming that the Nvidia 3D vision driver problem is in fact your problem?

The game crashes after hit the play button. The screen flashes black for a few seconds and then crashes.

Morph93, this is the most reported crash in this forum. It appears that the Nvidia 3D vision driver and the Steam in-game overlay are both not pleased with the game. Most of the people reporting it find a way around by rolling back the driver to an earlier version and/or by turning off the Steam overlay. Please take a look at these threads:

In all honesty, we don't even know what your problem is. All we know is you replied to a post by a user experiencing a problem with the Steam version that was since resolved, claiming the fix doesn't work for you.

The fact of the matter remains that as of today, we still have not received a single crash log or DxDiag report from you even though you are posting in a CRASH REPORTS thread.

You also posted in a thread titled 'Crashing on startup(Steam Edition)' and yet you are now saying that you don't even own the Steam version of the game, which isn't exactly helpful when we are trying to understand what the problem is.

Hi, just got the game on trial thinkng of buying it when its on steam deal.
But not if this issue remains.
Game crashed when i tabbed out of it (I know most games do).
But now when I start the game it says its in safe mode and when I try and change the resolution as soon as I click ok the game crashes again.
I dont want to play the game on lowest resolution...

As of today I tried Tropico 4. I immediatly liked it, so I made the mistake of buying it. According to steam i've played 5 hours.
In those five hours i've experienced 3 full on blue screens (never happened to me on this pc before).
I've encountered about 20 game crashes and I am baffled that there is no solution to this problem.
In all honesty, I am really regretting my purchase, but am finding myself trying and trying again and again to enjoy this game.
Sometimes it goes wel for about an hour, sometimes it crashes after 2 minutes.
The game always crashes when i perform a building action, about a second after placing a road, or power plant or completing a big building.

I have a pretty strong gaming pc, and have never encountered blue screens before.


I've already rolled back my nvidea driver (never had to do anything like this before, I've always been very content with the nvidea material).
I've already blocked steam communication, and the firewall is not enabling tropico to connect to the internet.

Pyromancer, your crash seems to be the same as the one of Malphai. It's an in-game problem caused by the president being unable to reach a destination. The problem will be investigated.

tipoup2011, make sure that your antivirus program doesn't block the game execution.
