Rolleyes Where's my map editor?
Quote:Are there any plans for building a community through modding and scripting support? How "open" and customizable will Tropico 3 be in this regard? Will you provide an easy to use map editor?

A: The Timeline Editor is a powerful tool allowing users to create their own custom scenarios called challenges. Events in these challenges will be very customizable, right up to the flavor text. So if you want to create a challenge about aliens abducting Tropican citizens, or to recreate a historical event like the Cuban missile crisis, you can now do so. The game will fully support sharing and rating user created scenarios online.

The players will be able to customize some aspects of the maps. The Map Generator allows you to quickly create a wide variety of random islands by setting various parameters such as map size, elevation, vegetation and natural resources.

http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/news/48008/...eloper-Q-A

After a couple of days I got really bored of the random island generator. I'm not saying it's bad but it's not good either Smile. You have 4 options and that's it. No you can't make nice hills to place your scenic observer, no you can't make a huge beach to accommodate 100 hotels and no.. you can't do much.

The quote was to praise the marketing department that made such a nice text, making me believe Tropico 3 will have a nice map editor Smile

Did you even try the challenge editor?

I very much finished the game, got almost all the achievements, etc. I have a lot of free time -_-. But that's not the point, I want a map editor.

I want also a map editor, because they had more opportunities and the long term of motivation would also be secured.

Sorry for my English!!!

As much as I want a map editor... the quote you quoted talks about the map generator....

To point out that exactly what they said dances around the issue and is not exactly explicit.

What does it have to do with Terraforming and rearranging initial buildings and peeps?

What some of your customers are saying is scripting events is less interesting than editing the island.

But it is for sure your game and all you have to do is train all the buyers to play it your way.

My post was a reaction to the "/game" remark which I took as a perception of the thread starter that there was nothing left to do in the game.

We do see and understand the demand of a terrain editor, but it was neither promised nor even hinted that Tropico 3 would ship with one. Including a full-blown terraforming tool would arguably have delayed the game by at least a couple of months. The option to place and rearrange initial buildings makes perfect sense, though and I'm sure we will consider this option for an upcoming patch or expansion pack.

The challenge editor is mentioned as an alternative because we see it as a very fitting tool to provide long-term replayability as it focusses on the game's strength in simulating politics and a state economy.

I like the sound of that, map editor would be very very welcome addition to the game. Wink

RE: Where's my map editor?
A map editor would be nice, but a good map generator will make me even more happy. The existing map generator is bearable, but it's not good enough to produce actually different islands, that are not just plain and almost round surfaces with a number of plateaus. It can't even generate hills.

or how about adding the "terraforming" task for construction guys? it will make them flatten a piece of land to make it suitable for building on.

oh and i would appreciate it if they let me bulldoze TREES.

RE: Where's my map editor?
From what I've read, the current map generator seems to be okay for size 3 islands, granted it can't make hills but only plauteaus, however it needs work apparently on size 4 and 5 islands as that is what produces the circular random maps. If one doesn't mind playing on size 3 and from what I've seen size 3 maps are pretty large (probably will be large enough for me) to begin with, but there will always be somebody that wants a larger size, if they could just incorporate a couple things...

1. Coves and bays on size 4 and 5 islands.
2. Mountains and hills as well as plauteaus
3. Allow the gamer to decide what minerals will be on the island.

Then I think the current RMG will be a good map generator. However I am only speaking from what I've seen posted that the RMG can do as I don't have it yet, so if people start showing islands of the largest size that have the coves or bays included, and mountains and hills start popping up on them then that's fantastic, the minerals apparently could not happen since the screenshot I've seen does not show the ability to select what minerals are on the island.

In situations like those, I find that bunkhouses are great leveling tools.

Just pause, set site, and cancel construction, repeat as needed, and you'll have a land bridge in no time Big Grin

I sometimes use that method to fill in internal lakes.

That method, of course, has limits, but its better than nothing.

if you make an expansion with it in lots of poeple will buy it, but can you guys make it cheeper than AP as AP cost more than T3 its self. make expansions cost £10-£20.

well we need food and I would like to see a drinking water requirement added. after all no one can suvive without water. It can be in the form of wells or fresh water lakes. Maybe we'd learn to love the lakes more?

The map generator is OK - though I would prefer to start with zero buildings and be allowed to place my palace. As stated before, the large islands are very bland. I usually play on the mid size.

i was also thinking of something like that, maby we could build a sea water purifyer that would look like a oil refineary, also it would supply water to the HOLE island not just a small are, its stupic that a TV broard cast cannot be heard on the other side of a very small island

RE: Where's my map editor?
I'm also disappointed that there isn't a map editor like there is in many other strategy/simulation games. Designing the perfect island would be as much a game in itself and would significantly add to the ongoing playability as well as greatly support the user-generated content community. For a game with such gorgeous graphics it's really inviting you even more to want to create your own island that will support the type of Tropico you want to play. It's very hard for a random map generators to create different types of islands that support the multitude of different playing styles and city types, even aside from the previously discussed terrain limitations.

I understand that it would have delayed release quite a bit but it would be good to have it in a future expansion. Aside from that I'm really looking forward to this game (I only just bought it and haven't installed it yet).

Same! I only just found out Tropico 4 was announced and could be out within 3 months (Q2 2011)! :O That seems like a VERY quick turnaround between T3 and T4 after only 16 months on the market to date.

It also seems like T4 isn't going to be a major change but more of an evolution of T3 as many of the extra features could have fallen into the realm of an expansion. Still, I'm certainly happy to see this game get more love and if they improve upon T3 and address some of the issues and user-requests (like a map editor) I will be lining up to buy T4! The teaser screenshot just looks so beautiful!

RE: Where's my map editor?
Tropico 4 indeed has a map editor Big Grin. I have created a tutorial video for using it, here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Yzc7Oj-tmc

Even though it is listed within the "Challenges" option, you can still play your map as an open-ended sandbox type. Just go back to the Challenges menu after you create it, select your map, and hit "play".

If you didn't set up any sequenced events, your map will just run as a normal open-ended sandbox game.

Why didn't you post this on the T4 board? There are a couple of threads there asking for info on the editor.
