If you play the campain go to edinburg and wait some time.

It's the only skill you can't raise with practice, right? Or do expeditions help?

Trade rises (slowly) with trade. Combat rises (somewhat faster) with combat. Repair rises (very quickly) when you repair the fleet.

2 of my captains have risen in navigation without using the trainer. Some month on a auto trade route round the baltic sea do the trick.

RE: Captains
You're quite right. Just tried a little experiment with 1.1.3. Started a new campaign, set up my usual trade route (Lübeck - Rostock - Malmö - Oslo - Aalborg), added two crayers (one armed and crewed) to the convoy, then let it go. The captain had 2 combat and 0 everything else.

Navigation and trade increased at about the same rate: first three points in 5-6 months each, then a little slower for the last two points. Both were maxed by December 1372. That's about 32 months. No pirate attacks, so repair was just 3.

I imagine more time at sea would make it go faster, but still, best to go to a trainer unless you're very patient.

@Eulenspiegel
I know Till used to hold a mirror right in the face of other people. He did that till the day he died. Now he stand in Ratzeburg. ("Hier stait Till Ulenspiegel" is written on his gravestone.) But i know that i am right, otherwise i would not write an advice to other people on this board.
