I have the same problem!! I've tried contacting Support 3 times and haven't heard a thing back. I've posted this problem and the lack of response from Support on Amazon (where I got the game). These are serious problems and Kalypso needs to address them promptly.
To answer your question, I think what's happening is the disks they're distributing (at least some of them, for XP) are missing a significant number of texture, object, character, etc. files. The fact that some of them appear (palm trees, female farmers, kids) indicates to me our systems are working okay. So it ain't you ... it's Kalypso, and they need to help us!!!
It IS frustrating to want to play this game and be left with those flippin' F boxes!!

RE: help PLEASE!!!
From what I've seen, it's caused by a failed install. Kalypso will say that it is now void, and that you will have to get a new one, so I would return your disks to the store for a refund, and use the money as you please.

I've written to Kalypso and to Haeminon (sp?) more than 3 times and no response. Consequently, I am writing to Amazon who distributed the game (to me) for a refund, but also to suggest that they pull the game as the company does not back its product and is unresponsive. If they're knowingly selling an "iffy" product, they shouldn't be allowed to sell it. Hear that, Kalypso?

RE: help PLEASE!!!
I have recieved an e-mail from kalypso. It gives a fix for steam users but none for boxes disks. Unfortunatly i have a boxed disk but here is what they said anyway........
step 1.open steam
step 2rightclick on tropic 3
step 3. choose properties
step 4.select local files
step 5.click on "verify integrity of game cache"
that should do it.
Hopefully this will be useful to somebody. If you have an other ideas for boxed versions of this game please help. thank you
