Tropico 4 Demo Impressions
As a longtime fan of the Tropico series, I can easily say that Tropico 4 has been, and still is, my most anticipated game of 2011.

I played through the demo campaign mission twice and I enjoyed it. it played fine on my recently bought Asus gaming laptop. The game felt like Tropico 3 but with added bells and whistles. The build menus took a little time to get used to but all in all it didn't bother me. As someone who played Tropico 1 and 3 a lot, I had no trouble jumping in and understanding the mechanics and nuances. In fact I skipped the tutorials.

Standout differences include the new "side quests" that pop up from time to time, which I had to dismiss some because the demo prevented me from building the buildings that would finish the quest. Another feature that I really liked was the construct now option (at additional cost). In Tropico 1 and 3, the fast speed sometimes felt too slow, sitting on mounds of cash and waiting for construction projects to be done. I'm glad they added this feature in 4.

I noticed that when selecting traits, you're given 3 to choose from, positive and negative, instead of being forced to choose 2 of each. Also, there seems to be a leveling system for these traits, they all start out at 1 star and I'm assuming they "level up" as you use them. I like it.

I am interested to see all of the new buildings and attractions that you can build and how they will interact with your island community. The ones I did build were pretty self explanitory and easy to figure out. The cabinet members for example you can either hire from overseas or use people that have job skills in certain areas, but also have to take into account their courage, leadership, and other personal qualities which the game does list for you when deciding between tropicans. Unfortunately the demo wouldn't let me explore the tourist side of the game, but the cruise ship looked like a nice touch as an attraction. I see that they added the requirement of purchasing or unlocking blueprints through quests, giving the player a sense of progression rather than being given all the buildings at the beginning.

The added characters and voiceovers were a nice touch. I'm half sad that Juanito isn't the DJ, but glad that Betty Boom isn't bombarding my ears every time I build something. The new music tracks were nice but often repeated, I imagine they would get tiring after a while like the ones in Tropico 3 did. I am not sure how many tracks are being released in the final version.

Overall, I'm glad the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" holds true with the Tropico series. I look forward to pre-ordering and playing on day one.

I agree with pretty much everything you've said.

I wish we knew a little more about how the Council of Ministers works tho. I know the game says that you need to have intelligent people as ministers, but what does it actually mean in terms of gameplay if a minister is more intelligent, or has more leadership ability? From the one mission in the demo, it looks like all the ministers do is allow you to pass certain edicts if you hire one. Like you cant pass any "Interior Edicts" until you have an interior minister. So if I can pass the edict with a dumb minister or a smart minister, whats the difference?

Hmm Europe and Middle-East and China is included in the game. It is possible a simple mistake in the Demo since I can only like US and USSR in the diplomatic Office. Will that be corrected in the final version? I heard that China is a rising superpower but I have no option to "Like" and "Favor" them in the Office.

Well actually when I hired a Finance Minister from abroad all his stats were pretty good. Soon I got a notification that said he had sold refrigerators to a band of Eskimos and the deal got popularized so I got a 20% Export Price Rise. So I think the better your Minister is the better he will perform when signing deals and such.

I believe if you read the policies in the Diplomatic Office, it says that the "Neutral" policy now actually raises your favor with China, the EU, & the Middle East, instead of raising both US & USSR by a little bit like in Tropico 3.

Oh ok thats cool. I only had one notification from my ministers & it was where one had gotten busted for embezzling money or something, & it gave me the option to keep him on with a happiness penalty, or fire him. I fired him.

I guess maybe you get better random things like that happen the smarter your ministers are? That would make sense.

RE: Tropico 4 Demo Impressions
I just played through the demo and honestly it just feels like a slightly-redesigned Tropico 3. There isn't a whole lot more you can do--the little missions are a nice touch, and some of the new buildings are pretty cool, but I can't see how any of the additions justify calling this a full sequel. The graphics actually seem a bit worse, and it's missing some content from Absolute Power--where's my trusty "Outlaw Faction" edict? And my trusty Juanito/Betty Boom Smile

The vast majority of buildings are completely identical to their T3 counterparts, it feels like I'm playing an add-on or expansion, not a full sequel.

I mean, I'll end up buying it anyway for sure, because I love all things Tropico (I'm hoping for a remake of Pirate Cove to be honest). It just doesn't look like there's much there to justify calling this an all-new game.

For the people that are on the fence, I'd recommend playing the demo and looking through everything, even the stuff that isn't available in the given missions.

I have to say, I would like if, in a patch, or expansion, at least some buildings were given new graphics.

I am impressed by the demo and even though it has a few quirks, I really like the added complexity. I feared that it would only go all colorful with no substance, I was proven wrong and am happy about that.

Too bad we couldn't test tourism and see how it works now, but this will come soon.

I would like a pavement/cobblestone/dirt stamp under miscelaneous things that you can place, so you can fill those random gaps between houses with a nice floor, if you so desire.

RE: Tropico 4 Demo Impressions
only picking 3 instead of 4? seams like just a way to make the game even easier.. along with the instant build now.. that was part of the challenge..

both these just seam to make the game even easier than it was before... which was a step back from t1.. You would think games would be harder these days, But sadly thats just not the case..

I wonder if anyone will take a chance on making a very challenging game for once.. instead of having to play 10-15 year old games to be challenged.

RE: Tropico 4 Demo Impressions
Too bad they built this demo better then the last one. All the good "fetures" the last one had are fixed this time around. Things like save then load at endscreen to keep playing forever. Or assigning hotkeys to the non demo buildings to place them.

I like most of the new stuff, missions varies the gameplay a bit although the rewards are kinda inconsitant. Nichard Ritson gave me 100.000 to win an election. It was all deposited in my swiss acount as I was stinkin rich already but still, 100.000 is a huge sum to just be given. At the other end some of the rewards are just a relesenship boost with a faction or nation. They don't seem to last very long so I mostly ignored them.

They build meny takes some getting used to. And is there a key to place multiple buidings?

The one thing I hope they improved is the population and road cap. I could reach the caps on a medium/small map in tropico 3 and now tropico 4 is featuring even larger maps.

I still feel like it's enough content to be a new game but il buy it anyway, couse im stupid like that.

Edit: Oh and the days of experimenting and building complicated roads through the ruff terrain and up mountains are now over. The road placing parameters are so heavily tweaked that you can't build on anything that isn't perfectly flat or just gently sloped. Really disappointing as some of the most fun i had in Tropico 3 was building the impossible roads all over the island.

RE: Tropico 4 Demo Impressions
Well hullo folks! Finished the demo and here are my thoughts having played Tropico 3, but not Absolute Power or Tropico 1 or 2:

At first glance it's disappointingly like Tropico 3. Most of the buildings looks are carried directly over for heaven's sake, with nary a face-lift. The mechanics work pretty much exactly the same, but the controls have been streamlined a bit. Protect yourself against rebels, fulfil the people's needs, build up a healthy economy and skim as much money as you can. Same as usual.

However! I am happy to say...

There's quite a lot new here that's pretty fun! My favourite addition are the new personalities in game. There's lots of characters who pop up, most of them thinly veiled satirical swipes at Richard Nixon, Yasser Arafat and the like. Some of the humour's amusingly cynical, as the American's order you to pay a 'freedom tax' so they'll add you to their 'least likely to invade' list. The voice acting is pretty good, I especially like the English toff character representing the EU. "Riff-raff on ma back again, don'tcha know." Then there's your advisors. They swing between Sim City style advice and setting you challenges and there's about eight of these council advisors and generals in all. They help keep the flow of the game dynamic and make it seem more like you're in charge of a living entity. Interestingly, you can't unlock most edicts now until you've hired the respective ministers. For instance I couldn't turn my cabaret club into a sercret police agency ready to kill the faction leaders until I hired the Minister of Interior. Seemed amusingly rum to send a Playboy Bunny to kill an old Communist woman with a zimmer frame.

There's new resources to exploit, though that's not much of a game changer. There are also criminal Tropicans too. The islands seem bigger and there's some nice new features. You can 'Quick Complete' buildings by paying extra brass. There's more building upgrades. Your avatar has traits they can build from mission to mission. There's a lot more dialogue and yes, new music alongside the old. One natural disaster showed itself - as if knowing I, a tornado obsessive weather nerd, was playing it, a twister appeared. This pleased me greatly. Looked like an F3 from the damage, by the way - despite the F4-5 flying trucks!

Don't know if its just me but it seems like there's more decision making too, I was mulling and clicking more than in Tropico 3.

The graphics are slightly improved over Tropico 3 with more detailed models and a few more effects. Only a little though. It looks very nice, not jaw-dropping though. But then again, it is a strategy game. You can zoom out further too, which is nice.

Quibbles:

Sometimes new event dialogues or pop up boxes would nonsensically appear over existing ones. For example my minister of interior started asking about a newspaper building in the middle of the tornado disaster, and I got a lecture on schools whilst putting down a rebellion.

There don't seem to be much in the way of additional avatar clothing customisation above Tropico 3. Maybe it's just the demo and there's more in game. Once again there's far fewer options for the female avatar than the male, sort it out guys. Also some of the written notes indicate a male El Presidente when the female is selected. Note to Devs: More avatar costumes please, the more customisable the better.

The Environmental minister keeps blithering about trees. They're a pain to place - practically individually planted and you have to rotate them constantly to make it all look natural. A Sim City style paint-brush planting style would be better. Minor niggle there though.

The secret police types lack interesting animations. You don't really get to see them do anything.

The rebellion was a bit confusing, the big rebel arrows had gone so I couldn't find them, and couldn't work out where any of my soldiers had engaged them.

It could do with explaining export storage and over-employment a bit better, never got the hang of that.

The 'Golden Hour' morning and evening light doesn't seem quite as nice or as long as in Tropico 3, funnily enough. I think the lighting was better in 3, though the models seem slightly more detailed and better scaling in this. Perhaps it's just a demo thing.

I miss Juanito - couldn't he co-host?

Other than that it looks like a very fine game and even more polished than the third. If you've played Tropico 3 recently then I hesitate to recommend this, but if it's been a while and especially if you missed Absolute Power, it looks like a very tempting buy - especially for the added personality and mini-quests. If you haven't played a Tropico game from 3 onwards, I say go get!

SO! Further note to devs: Not much to patch but I'd very much like:

Light to be a little nicer and warmer and more tropical.

More sinister clothing and outlandish styles for both male and female, and to increase the female model options a fair bit.

Other events to be delayed until disasters and rebellions are played out.

Custom music support if you ain't got it.

Some more 'clicked on' dialogue for El Presidente and Fem Presidente.

RE: Tropico 4 Demo Impressions
I figure they would rather have just one thread for impressions.. so ill place my comments on it in here.. Im just gonna go with an entire list as i go through...

tutorial,

Didnt see a way to play as a female avatar.. Sad for all those female dictators out there.. (totally could of missed this one though) I do like the new options, some really interesting ones. Was hoping for more outfits for avatar too. Not sure how i feel about only 3 options, rather see 4 i think, especially seeing you added even more choices.

Liked the improved direction, great for first timers.. enjoy the added color in the landscape, buildings looked kinda washed, but probably just seeing it as different.. im sure i wouldnt notice it as time went on. Unhappy that resolutions stoped at 1600/1024,, really would like to see 2100 or 2400, even if they left them stated as unsupported.

Shanty,
Was highly disapointed this building has not been improved.. Why this thing is still a single family is beyond me.. Any shanty in any poorer nation is gonna have more people than this. How about a little code update on this building? give us 2 settings on it. first setting, 2 families, Building works as is.. second, the familiy house, Ups house to hold 4 families, BUT polution increases. This would make much more sence in game terms and size of the building. Its bigger than the bunk house and families all over in poorer areas pack people into shanty size houses. It would make this building a very popular distant farm housing, fishing dock or remote area for retired ext... please consiter this..

early game it would make a lot more RP sence istead of rushing to tenements.. put up a bunch of shanties, as money rolls in you build better housing, drop them to 2 families, still for the poor. you would have a range of houses, an old town shanty village, the capitilist would like this style, russia not so much.. Makes game sence, praticle sence, and really would get this buildings use upped and to a reasonable use lvl.. In crease price to 250.. and its now a building people will definatly use and have effects you should think about.

Build menu/almanac

any way to get it to always pop in a specific spot? perhaps a check box? that way we can pop it in a certain place and then click, and it would always pop there?, what about getting it to flip? i much rather have this thing spawn locked at the bottom of the screen, verse all over my screen.. (this screams x-box controller upgrade, I play with a keyboard and mouse)

alamac, I didnt think it could be bigger than last time, but it sure seams like it.can we get a way to scale this, and moveable? And make upause work while we veiw flipping and reading and clicking is a huge part of this game, pausing every time we do is just torcher..

Didnt see any new plantings or gardens, was hoping for more beutification items

Love the new info pop up box, its much cleaner and gives us more usefull info per tab.. I would even go as far as combing the Housing tab, and skills tab.. this would leave us with just 3 quick tabs to check for all info. What about pop up thought bubbles on the tropicans,, turn on/off option so we can see what tropicans are thinking with out clicking on them

Love the new unlocking blueprints.. Makes you think a bit more about which to spend your money on verse everything just being there already. gives more things to spend money on early, and have to make choices.

Quick building should have some sort of negitive effect other than just paying.. what about a decrease in something, Just quick building at will with nothing other than money holding you back doesnt seam like much of a comprimise. Loosing respec from bringing in forien workers to do the job atleast might make it something to think about.. do it enough you might start protests, get crimials, more rebels.. Now its just someplace to shunt the millions extra you can easily earn with no thought to it.

No new edicts? this part of the game seams something thats pretty under developed.. edicts to help, and especially edicts that have a negitive effect added would really make things more interesting

Ok.. thats it for the tutuorial... Im playing the campain next.. Smile

wishing for a grass paint brush and pavement brush..

markets, Stack pallets way to high, 2 pallets high would be plenty.. Perhaps reduce the amounts per stack, so that way a full 4 pallet long, 2 high is a full market.. as it is now it stacks higher than my church..

dumps, the distance is much better, but now with the much larger islands, they should cover even more area.. the trick with them would be to make sure you had enough to cover the larger area.

entertainment.. it seams like the buildings work better.. I was actually making money at my pub, and even with 2 cabberets, and a restraunt and even a zoo, people still seamed to use it which was nice.

Not sure if it was just cause its a demo, but money seamed tons easier to come by, and the instant building really took away any need to builders.. I could just instant build everything as i went.. my only industry was a gold mine, and a few farms, and 4 fishing docks and i had more than enough to build at whim.

LIked the different models, even if it was just color.. it did make things more interesting to look at the population..

couldnt figure out criminals, couldnt find any.. even with no police station and a giant red area.. tried shooting people at random but that just made rebels...

RE: Tropico 4 Demo Impressions
Thanks for the demo. Have only had a chance to play part of the first mission so far, but

1. Love the improved graphics
2. Reallly like the new interface with everything on one page rather than 3 (?) tabs
3. Roads look much cleaner, so far
4. Noticed when you cancel construction on a tenement it leaves a gray patch. This could be a good thing as you could "pave" an entire block and build on it. On the down side, don't seem to be able to get rid of it (?)

I'll buy in September and in the meantime continue to check out the demo between now and then.

The good:
1.) Rubble had the option to rebuild the destroyed structure. Very useful, as that is what I did 99% of the time anyway.
2.) Import system is well managed imo.
3.) The UI redesign isn't bad.
4.) Blueprints will stretch out the "development" period, adding a little extra strategy to it. (T3 once you had your economy up it was relatively smooth sailing unless you overspent your budget)
5.) The new stat system is well done imo.
6.) I liked the portraits. Hail to the sheik! lol..
7.) Much of the information is better organized (family tree, etc..)

The bad:

1.) Prima facie it does not appear the ministers serve any other purpose other than an extra prereq for some edicts and the occasional random event. That and they soak up the dough..!
2.) Can't speak for tourism and many of the new structures.

Still a lot in the air.

The skills of your ministers have direct consequences of the events and tasks they trigger. The better suited a minister is, the better the passive effect on his department will be.

I found that it's a little hard for me to tell which way some buildings face. Buildings could use a directional indicator that shows which way they face when being placed, as well as which of their sides are considered open.

The only bad thing is that the demo is too short. I feel that it should include all the tutorial missions, (I hope there are more than those four!) and maybe 2 campaign missions, or to let you play the one campaign mission to your second election.

Well, that, and El Presidente yaps too much. Big Grin I'd love a percentage slider that controlled how often he says something when selected.

Edit: The ability to rebind the camera movement keys would be nice too.

What i disliked about demo: Exactly same problems with terraforming as in T3, not improved a single bit. When i tried to build on a small slope, everything went to hell and i had to place and delete roads and small buildings lot of times to make ground flat enough to hold my building and a proper road to it. After a 10 minutes i finally managed to do this and in result i had messed up ground texture: stone-paved ground (left from garages), sand (left from shanties) and lots of sudden jumps in ground elevation.

I honestly didn't see that in the demo. My usual "I WIN" button involves an economy driven / happy island so I usually have no need to build them unless a scenerio is scripted to do it like some in Tropico 3 were.

I hope they improve the AI in the battles somewhat, sometimes it would be 10 against 5 and all of the 5 rebels would reach the gather point before my men and pick off my troops 1 by 1 as they arrived. I eventually chose the "War Hero" background in Tropico 3 to give me an edge, just in case. I also get an army base and military modernization as quickly as I can, as long as I have the money to do it.

I found it funny that his election speech is the same as in Tropico 3 almost word for word. I guess Tropicans are that stupid that you can repeat a great speech 17 times and it wins you the election every single time. Wink

both these just seam to make the game even easier than it was before... which was a step back from t1.. You would think games would be harder these days, But sadly thats just not the case..

I wonder if anyone will take a chance on making a very challenging game for once.. instead of having to play 10-15 year old games to be challenged.

I'm sure you can adjust the difficulty on the scenerios and create a sandbox map with the sliders set on a harder setting. I personally like being given the choice, some like to unwind after a 10 hour fun filled day at work and others like the challenge.

RE: Tropico 4 Demo Impressions
Same graphics (aren't pretty anymore). Same music. Same buildings. Same characters. Same ugly blocky avatar selection. Same terraforming/road issues (just sigh -_- ).

Liked new trait system. Liked new nations. Didn't like some new color schemes. New UI is decent, but nothing special, in my opinion.

Overall - feels like an addon for tropico 3 and not a complete new game. Certainly ain't buying on steam.

Its not the same music. Its the same TYPE of music, but different songs.

I agree with pretty much everything else you've said though. I definitely see how people can say that its like an addon to Tropico 3 & not a full new game.

I dont really care though. I'm such a huge Tropico fan & I want to support the developer so I have no problem paying $40 for this. I dont care if it is like an addon. Hell, I'd pay $40 for an addon to Tropico 3. Its one of my favorite games of all time! My major back in college was political science & I'm fluent in Spanish so this game is right up my alley! I could play this game for hours. I cant wait for 4 to come out! Smile

RE: Tropico 4 Demo Impressions
My long gestating T4 Demo feedback (excuse the duplication of others' comments) -

THE GOOD:

- Colour! My island looks fresh and vibrant with the new shades.
- Visible goods: I love being able to see my output storage; gives you a great at-a-glance idea of production.
- Criminals: Prisons/Cops finally have a use and hunting/targeting Criminals to be hauled off to jail is fun.
- Cars: They look crisp and more detailed. They also seem to drive/function better (less traffic jams).
- Fireworks: They look awesome compared to the T3 ones, especially with the trails from shooting up into the sky.
- Ministry: Appointing Ministers and having a working government is useful, more realistic and will undoubtedly add depth.
- Missions: They keep gameplay flowing and actually give you something to do rather than an arbitrary end objective, like in T3.
- Sane Tropicans: I found my people in general less spastic and ridiculous. My island looked more like a functioning society rather than a headless chicken coop.
- Post Disaster Rebuilding: love the added feature of clicking on rubble for a quick re-build of destroyed structures.
- Music: IS GREAT! Can't wait to hear the full soundtrack.
- Pics/Voice Acting: The portraits of characters and very strong voice acting add LOADS of character to the game. I can't wait to get to know more of these people through my T4 campaign. This has been sorely lacking up til now.

THE BAD:

- Customization options for El Prez are unchanged from T3. Hopefully this is just in the demo and there's really a full closet awaiting us at launch.
- Buildings look exactly the same (with the exception of minor colour variation). I was really hoping for some new models.
- Election Speeches: Again, exactly the same as T3. Hopefully this was just for demo convenience and new speeches are added for the full game.
- Ministers Dress/Models: I think the Ministers should all have custom models/dress codes (business attire?), as keeping them in the same garb from their old jobs just seems unrealistic and plain/boring.
- Flat land Req'd: Building anything on land that was even ever so slightly sloped was near impossible. This is something that has regressed since T3, so I hope it's patched or fixed for launch.
- Cancel Missions? Correct me if I'm wrong but I couldn't find a way to cancel any tasks I had undertaken. This was especially frustrating as I was presented with tasks for which I didn't have access to the required buildings.

THE UGLY/BEAUTIFUL TRUTH: Stay tuned as I'll post this in a fresh thread with a link to follow.

George W. Bush: "A dictatorship would be a heck of a lot easier, there's no question about it." El Presidente agrees. Cool

I was referring to his "Selection" speech not his "Election" speech. As in, the stuff he says when you click on him or click the Avatar icon. Big Grin He responds every single time, unless he's still talking from the last time he was selected. Which, I understand, is useful feedback to know if you've selected the right dude, but I usually get him by clicking the Avatar button so I know it's him. In T3 it's kinda funny, he pronounces "ruling" as "rooling" and I always hear it as "drooling" hehe.

But yeah now that I'm playing Tropico 3, I'm hearing the same speeches over and over. I usually praise myself and pick some random topic, since there isn't a lot of feedback in T3 as to what is going on with the various issues or why I would want to choose them, and I can't open the almanac to research things without closing the speech window.

As to why the citizens buy the speech, I imagine it's either because things are going well and they don't really care what you say, or things are going very badly and the angry men with machine guns glare if they so much as blink while you're talking. :>

I have to agree with you here. Its kind of disconcerting seeing the one minister who used to be a shopkeeper still running around in the shopkeeper outfit. The ministers should all have snappy business attire.

I'm excited to see what the Stock Exchange does. Did anyone go into the economy tab of the almanac and see the goodies in there? I must say, this game has a more T1 feel, but is much better.

Its not the same music.

Some of it is the same as in Tropico 3. Loading music and some "radio" tracks.

Im not saying that this game looks or feels "bad", but i didn't feel like i was playing a new game.

I have decent PC and top video card, so perhaps this is why i wasn't impressed by graphics at all. They really felt outdated. Especially when compared to some screenshots of upcoming anno 2070. Maybe not enough bloom...

i dont mind the graphics, to me a game like this adding major custom shading and stuff doesnt really add much.. But what i am sad about is the lack of resolution.. Just upping that and adding a increase font size would go a long way in helping this game look much better on a PC
