Question Best Way to Pre-Order Tropico 4?
So I'm taking the plunge and pledging my commitment to Tropico 4.

I've never purchases any Direct-to-Drive content (Steam, etc.) before and I'm hesitant to do so, as I like having a physical box in my hand, both to add to my collection and for the sake of owning a hard disk.

Also, I'm in Canada, which limits my options slightly. So what say you forum?

- Amazon: Easy and typically quick delivery.
- Gamestop/EB: Tricky, charges s&h.
- Mass Retailer (Best Buy, Future Shop, Wal-Mart)
- Online download (Steam, etc.)

George W. Bush: "A dictatorship would be a heck of a lot easier, there's no question about it." El Presidente agrees. Cool

Get a disk. Register your KEY with kalypso account.
At least your not going to spend an hour+ downloading it and constantly worrying that some shift in company policy, take-over or internet problem is going to effect your playing.

In 3 or 4 weeks, I will look around the retail stores for a disk and if none can be found then Ill buy it from Direct2drive. No pre-ordering for me

I've already got it preordered from Steam.

I pretty much download all my games through Steam now. I dont have to worry about swapping discs out when I play games or downloading no-CD patches. I dont have to hunt around for the latest patch to a game. I dont have a bajillion boxes & jewel cases sitting in a closet collecting dust (which makes my wife much happier.)

Soooo yea, Steam for me. I also like that I got a Steam copy of Tropico reloaded for free when I preordered. It made me go back & play T2 again. Wink

My only gripe is that Kalypso is releasing it a few days LATER on Steam than in physical stores, so I could actually have it a little quicker if I got it in a store. With most releases, it will come out at the same time or sometimes even before the store release on Steam. I'm still not understanding why its not going to unlock on September 1st instead of August 26th.......

The only benefit of buying from steam is that they auto update with patches, which can be a good thing and a bad thing.

I buy all my box games from gamestop (once EB) right down the street.. It saves me amazon shipping rip-off.. 6-8 bucks for a game? no thanks.. Unless of course you sign up for their buyer plan for what ever price it is.. but then its not free, your really paying 100 bucks to get some stuff shipped to ya.

I wont use steam, i dont like the fact that they can just close your accounts, from something like letting a friend play your game. (with a disk i can loan them it) Now.. if kaylpso would just use GOG.com as an online shop, then i would consiter that, but typically i only use it if i cant find the disk.. Who knows whats gonna happen to these online shops in 5-10 years. they shut down you could be screwed.. Not like that hasnt happened before

I would say steam. Auto-patches, exclusive content, comes with Reloaded and has achievements (if you're into that kind of stuff).

But only get it from there if you have a stable internet connection, for steam to start up, you need internet. If you do not, I recommend get a boxed copy from a local store.

As a Canadian I usually go to the mass retailers.

Communists (+++)
Intellectuals (++)
Environmentalists (+)

Your disk could break also. Its happened before! Wink

There are pros & cons to every method of obtaining a game. Each person has to weigh those pros & cons & come to the correct decision for themselves.

Best way to get it from BEST to WORST. (1 is best way, 7 is Worst way).
1. Boxed from local retailor.
2. GamersGate
3. Impulse
4. Direct2Drive
5. Other Digital distrubution services
6. not getting it
7. getting it on steam.

Why would steam be so bad, that not getting it would be worse?

It has instant automatic updates, achievements and (somewhat sadly) exclusive content.

I've got it pre-ordered from Amazon. Here in the States, they're offering a $10 credit on pre-orders, which more than takes care of the shipping.

I preordered from steam it is good as it gives you DLC and i get 2 games for preordering it (Tropico, [Paradise island DLC] and Tropico 2) The updates are a good thing but if you don't want them you can always untic the box that says keep my game up to date!
