Shopping Mall
I only have the demo at the moment, so the mall is locked but I noticed its not in food and resources with the marketplace, so what does it do?
Is it a tourist attraction or entertainment or what?

can't wait to buy the full game!

It sells luxury goods, which are imported from China, to tourist and Tropicans, Tropicans only, in one work mode. It can also only sell too women. It cost around $25,000 and employs 4 shopkeepers, high school
educated women.

Actually, I think it fills a "hidden" stat, called "LUX", which, according to the tooltip, raises happiness generally.

I was reading the thoughts of some of my Tropicans in the demo and some of my citizens wished they could buy some luxury goods.

So my guess is, some Tropicans will have a preference for this kind of entertainment, just like casino, bars and restaurants.

I presume some of the industrial goods like Furniture, Rum, Cigars, Weapons and Jewelery will count as Luxury goods.

put it under outlet mode and set the fee to $20, for better results.

Actually (& dont take this as the gospel cause I dont have the full game yet) I think that the luxury goods are a separate good that you have to import from China.

Still it will be nice to be able to build a Luxury Goods factory which serves acts officially a means to legally brand your goods as "insert famous brand here".

A bit of a disappointment but I can live with that. Just wanted to see some use from the industrialized goods.

What would the raw material be?

You could work in 2-3 different goods (needs at least one to operate):

1) Gold Mine --> Jewelry Factory --> Luxury Jewelry

2) Cotton Plantation --> Textile Factory --> Luxury clothes/fabrics

3) Cattle Ranch --> Tannery --> Luxury Leather Coats/Boots

This would give you many more industry, export and luxury goods options for your island...or you can keep the cheap Chinese imports coming.

George W. Bush: "A dictatorship would be a heck of a lot easier, there's no question about it." El Presidente agrees. Cool

RE: Shopping Mall
Well just going by some logical thought, as i dont have T4 yet..

It seams like the mall is a high end entertainment building. that means you should be pricing acrodingly, something like 18 dollars or more atleast, and only adding it late in the game once you have the population to support it.

edit, nvm, garage is on the other side of the theater

I'm not convinced that's correct. If it were then the "Forbid Imports" option on a mall would be non-sensical. I haven't actually tried it out though.

I haven't tried it too, but the nuclear plant has also the "Forbid Imports" option, while there isn't another option to find uranium.

RE: Shopping Mall
the most amusing thing about this building to me is that your tropicans demand this sort of goods from the get go. your starting island of 50 citizens, that are all dirt poor farmers and construction workers earning $5 a month demand luxury goods that neither you or they can afford, it even triggers protest within the first few years on any island. pretty sure this "necessity" was left unfinished.

and for some reason the devs also decided to lower the starting admission of random bulidings to arbitrary prices, if the minimum starting wage was and is always $5, for what reason is the pub set to $3 now? even more absurd is the mall starts at $1 iirc, which is a guaranteed loss that will take a while to recoup if you forget to raise it immediately.
