Best Player In The World Challenge
Hi Guys,

I have created a new online challenge called "best player in the world (V1)"

The idea is to create a flat baseline map where players can try to get the highest score possible using their optimal strategies. I created a challenge of the same name for Tropico 3 which was quite popular (top 10)

I'm hoping this challenge will become a defacto hall of fame of sorts. This isn't a regular scenario where you have to "export 100,000 units of lumber" or whatever. It's a balanced, neutral canvas for players to use their favorite strategy to achieve the highest score possible.

How high can we push the score?

I have set this version to 35 years (rather then 50) because it means you need to optimise your opening a little bit more., which should bring a little bit more skill to the whole idea.

The amount of minerals, oil and quality farm land I have placed is also very high. I'd welcome feedback to make the challenge more balanced (to allow a greater combination of viable strategies) For example should there be less sugar?

I'm pretty sure there is a lot of old Tropico players out there who will like this idea.

I'd also be happy to provide the map/challenge templates to anyone who wants to improve (if that's possible)

Currently this challenge is on page 9 of the online challenge browser. If you'd like to support a hall of fame, please play this map through and submit your score to move it up to the top. The more players who play this map, the more it actually represents the best player in the world!

I'm going to play it through, let's see how I manage. Hopefully, you do a 50 year challenge with some pre defined goals which are told on description.

RE: Best Player In The World Challenge
Thanks Poro, i would consider adding bonus score points for reaching certain goals as long as they are part of a balanced overall approach.

for example tourism isnt really viable as a high score strategy on it's own. but if there were bonus points for reaching a certain number of tourists this could become part of an overall combination high score win. as opposed to just going pure rum exports.

I will also consider a 50 year challenge if it can be proven this helps broaden the strategy involved to get the highest score. currently i think a 50 year challenge only narrows the options people would consider to get the high score.

I have just played through my own challenge and achieved a high score of 200,000+ using a booze baron strategy. I'm sure if i focused a bit more i could hit 300,000. There is enough gold and oil to make a combination industry high score possible. If I could work in some conditional bonuses for swiss bank and tourism it could get more intersting.

RE: Best Player In The World Challenge
50 year challenge would work only if there are wide diversity of tasks to do. All of these pure high score challenges are done by booze baron and rum only added with some oil exports, so I did my score with broad range of all available industries. Which automatically means 50% less points, but oh well, still had a blast while doing it. I think next I will do the same mission with booze baron and rum to see if I can max out the score.
Oh and addition to previous, I would also love to see a 30-35 y challenge where rum factory and sugar are banned, because for true high score, there is only booze baron way to go.

RE: Best Player In The World Challenge
I have had a few requests for the challenge file. you can download it here:

Best Player In The World (V1)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.thevariousartists.com.au/tropico4/Best Player In The World (V1).hpk
------------------------------------------------------------------------

**** IMPORTANT ****
If you decide to make changes and upload this map please begin at (V1) and also attach (YOURNAME) to the map title.
For example: Best Player In The World (V1 - YOURNAME)
This will create a "branch"

If your changes are good, we can then use your map as the basis for the next official version. Either by supplying the file back to me for upload or I will simply say go ahead to you and you will use the official name with next version number ie (V2)

*******************

Please follow this system so we can control at least try and control the latest official (and best) version of the map. We don't want 50 versions online with the same name, it will ruin the idea and make ongoing improvement impossible.

Thankyou to everybody who played last night. This is now the most popular challenge online.

If you finish the map, please provide your strategy in this thread.

Great idea Juggler, I'll have to check it out!

I'd love to see more of these threads explaining Challenges and comparing strategies pop up on these forums so here's hoping you're starting a trend.

Looks nice, but there are no trees, so exporting fine tropical furniture isn't an option Smile

Btw. how did you get such a nice coverege of fishing? I am trying to figure out what determines good fishing spots, but are unable to.

It feels like somebody is abusing bugs or something. How it is possible to get over a million points in that challenge? I can easily understand 300k, but more than that sounds a bit fishy... Gotta try second attempt at some point, I managed to reach 6nd place at this point.

RE: Best Player In The World Challenge
I agree 300K is very very high... but possible.

Congratulation on Joost for breaking 300K ( and uploading his island )

I'm not sure how ShadowWolf achieved 1.5million score but there must be a bug or cheat involved. I just don't see how this is possible... he has not uploaded his island.

Any ideas guys?

Hey Tk Frost,

Agree the next version needs trees.

I'm not sure how I got the good fishing. The only thing I did to the water was to level it at low level, rather then deep water. Perhaps that is what causes it...

I was thinking about how ShadowWolf's highscore was possible and the only possibility I could think of was cheat codes.

I just ran a test and can confirm that cheat codes work in the challenge. I opened up the online challenge and typed in the cheat code that gives you 100,000 cash, and it worked...

We will need to disable cheatcodes in the next version. If this is possible.

Had a lot of fun with this and learned a lot playing it through a couple times. Smile In awe of Joost's score.

My main issue was that I couldn't get enough immigrants to my island to fill my jobs fast enough, then I had a complete glut of them at the very end.

Too bad you can't get rid of the cheaters' scores.

OK, can I please know what does booze baron means? Thanks! Are you referring to exporting a lot of rum?

Cool

I think that to get a lot of immigrants to your island, you should increase the wages of your workers.

Hope this help!

RE: Best Player In The World Challenge
The booze baron is a trait/background you can pick which gives you extra money for rum exports.

Thanks for the suggestion on wages, but the ungrateful bastards were already getting a higher wage than the rest of the Caribbean, so no more money for them. Smile I haven't ever really had that issue before, so it was strange. It was almost like I had the llama flu event for a while, then all of a sudden they just started flocking to my island in the last 3 years of the challenge.

I'll probably try that challenge again sometime this weekend after I play a couple others or actually finish the campaign.
