New challenge: Tropican Paradise
I managed to complete my first challenge and I tried to do some tasks to keep players busy. Main point is still to get good score at the end, but tasks give something to do while constructing your dream island. There are also some "hidden bonuses" which affect your score. Nothing impossible, but let's say that you have to be balanced th reach the full score.

Challenge is online and can be found with name "Tropican Paradise". It is a custom map with couple separate islands which are connected with premade land bridges to make transportation possible. For next one, I will aim for more comprehensive storyline and more advanced tasks.

All bug reports here, and let the best player win! :-)

Just got done playing it - good job. You have lots of challenges which keep the fun factor up. I didn't run into any problems except that at one point in the game it switched my gameplay speed to Pause (no windows opened, etc) and wouldn't let me set it any other setting. I saved it and reloaded the game and it was fine. This probably had nothing to do with your creation, but is rather a "rare bug".

How do you rate online challenges?

Again, great job! I like Missions/Challenges that show that some thought and time was really put into it. I've been working on one all week and hope to release it tomorrow.

RE: New challenge: Tropican Paradise
I've just started playing this, but so far so good. One comment at the moment - I've been given the task to export 2500 canned goods, but I haven't gotten around to building my cannery just yet (my builders seem unusually lazy and are already backed up on buildings, despite the fact that I've build an extra construction office!). But somehow, I've already reached 1519/2500 canned goods... without having a cannery. Obviously something else I'm exporting is registering as "canned goods", but I can't quite tell from looking at my buildings or the almanac which one it is.

The only things I'm exporting at this time are gold, oil, and sugar. I'm also producing corn and fish, but most of that is being eaten by my Tropicans, rather than getting exported... at least the almanac shows it's not being exported anyway.

I will report back with more impressions!

Actually, it counts industrial goods, so crude oil gives you points towards that. I noticed that on testing, but decided to leave the option in :-)

Ah, that explains it! I had a feeling it might be the oil, but I couldn't quite work out how to confirm that, since I couldn't match up any numbers.

Yep, that was simply a design choice. Otherwise it might be a bit tough for people who are not used to powerplay the start. Sad thing is that I forgot to lower the export fees, so late game tends to be too easy. For next challenge, I try to make something which really requires skill :-)

RE: New challenge: Tropican Paradise
I played it.. It seams like it would be good for a new player that wants to get the jist of the game. it has enough quests i think to keep a player busy. And more than enough resources to do what ever you want. Over all the island layout isnt to bad.. rather simple but thats good for the flexiblity.

To me its more of a sandbox, which is good for some. i personally like more story/challenge, RP.. But for what it is, its a good start on your challenge quest.

I just messed around and got a 88k, not much politcal tourmoil on the island.. more a city builder.

I think i did all your quests, 500k, 1000 people, unlocked industry, trying to think what else. are all those side quests generics? or did you make those too? like the chineese wanting fish, or pineapple, or build a stock market, or export weapons? anyways, i tired to do every quest i could, though i did skip cannery quests, mainly cause i didnt build one.. ahh well..

Ohh btw, i tried to look at your island you have posted, and it said i needed some DLC, I have no idea what the DLC might be, unless its cause your island is from patch 1.0, and im up to 1.03 now? any idea?

Side quests are generic, not made by me. And yes, it is more like a city builder. There are not that many challenges which actually have some content, so this is good option for traditional sandbox.
Next one is going to be more strict and challenging, when I just get time to complete it... :-)

DLC might be Steam special edition? I've got newest patch.

RE: New challenge: Tropican Paradise
well im actually working on one that is a story.. i just started but im having lots of trouble getting stuff working like i want it to.. I dont know who can point me in the right direction, but i may make a thread soon with all my questions.

The basic plot.. YOu get washed up to shore on a little island with some evironmentalists living in a shanty village and in isolation. they beleive the gods still haunt the island back when the original natives were killed during the spanish invasion.

I havent decided exactly what the goals are yet.. might be an option.. either get everyone to believe in the gods, or get them to not believe.. Choices are fun!

Its also a very polical island, with lots of rebels.. and criminals if you dont keep people happy. So far i made the island, and now im learning about the coding to make it all work. I know basic and a lot seams like that,. all the if then next crap.. reminds me of making which way games in dos back in the 80's.. though obviously a little more complex.

One of your first decisions is if you should decide to let the islanders go barefoot, for a -15% overall production... Dont be so quit to say no.. those hippies hate their shoes and might make your life miserable from that point on!

see stuff like that.. How do i set -15% over all production? or forbid imports to start? Or lock buildings.. lots of questions i have.. Big Grin

RE: New challenge: Tropican Paradise
Most modifiers are pretty straight forward, pretty much click and write what to adjust and how much. Some of them are a bit more difficult and requires patience. Anyway, make a separate thread about map development and maybe we can get some guide for aspiring map developers :-)

Actually, T4 tools are extremely straightforward when you get the logic, but the challenge editor UI is not the most user friendly one. Main thing is patience to test test test and test so everything works :-)
