Been wondering for litrally years.....
When u place a mine, there is a small box in the top left hand corner with some boxes blanked out and some not....

What is it?

That's the overlay mode indicator. The game turns verlays automatically when you are placing a mine or a farm and indicates so by displaying the icon. You can access all overlays via the corresponding menu at any time.

Also does searching for aliens actually do anyting?

Many buildings have overlays that appear when you place them. Mines show ore deposits, farms show crop conditions, police stations show crime, dumps show pollution, etc. That little icon doesn't really mean anything other than the overlay is visible.

Searching for ETs gives your Intellectual faction respect a boost, I believe. You can highlight the different functions in the building menu to see the various effects.

It's similar to building statues, or really any building, that certain factions like/dislike.. If you notice as the years go on, things get added to the factions that they like/dislike. for example, a news papper set to military, or no tabbaco for communisits. a comment might show up for this, im not sure though.
