Barges were and are quite common where heavy seas don't interfer, of course. Traffic between Washington, Oregon and Alaska is mostly barge borne. Lots of the British colliers were little more than motorized barges.

However, what we see as the ubiquitous steel cargo container was not common in the 1950's. The US military was pioneering in containerization in the latter part of WWII. Reuseable containers became established more slowly. The first step was shipping motor truck trailers loaded with cargo.

I would submit that the most common vessel to call at small Caribbean islands would have been the "Mail Boat". They were often privately owned, operated under contract for scheduled mail service, and provided passenger and freight service as an additional service.

I would consider "short haul" to be very relative -- actually anything not trans-Atlantic or trans-Pacific.

Just to clear a point in your first part of your comment. The traffic through the Port of Tacoma which is Washington States largest port and one of the largest in the US does not have container barge traffic. How do I know this? I can see the port from the North side facing the water. I see literally every ship coming and going. The only barge traffic I see is sawdust for the paper mill. Not saying you are wrong however I know what comes and goes out of the largest Washington State port.

Edit:

After reading your post again I understand that you are most likely talking about the "inside passage" I believe that's what it's called. So you are right for that area. However I know that APL, Maersk and others use container ships to Alaska. Most of the container traffic between BC and Washington comes down I-5.

Worms / Bracknell, 10th June 2009

Kalypso Media are today releasing ten new screenshots for their upcoming city building strategy game TROPICO 3. The new screenshots show the steamy, bustling City of Tropico Island together with views of the harbor and life in the jungle.

TROPICO 3 will be published by Kalypso Media, developed by Haemimont games and hitting stores worldwide this September.

For further information please visit the official game website http://www.tropico3.com

OK I live in Germany and want the English version - where do I get?

What's the target price going to be - guessing $49.95?

Where can I order online?

Already excited - been playing the Mucho Macho for years now Shy

Loving this stuff - game graphics look much improved. I'm impressed and say this is long over due.

As for the towers and boats - I think they kick ass (look great)! Have no problem with them - not sure what all the crying is all about??? You would think all these die hard tropical fans would be happy someone is developing a 3rd version.

As in my prevous post - sign me up - can't wait for the new release.

Prosst und Danke!

Exclamation RE: Tropico 3: Ten new screenshots released!
In #3 ( http://forum.kalypsomedia.com/attachment.php?aid=91 ), I believe if you look closely, you will see a Showgirl having a close encounter with a male Tourist. Well, not that close, perhaps just extending an invitation to visit the Cabaret.

Hmmmm... I wonder....

Would the effect of say.. a tv station or radio station be effected by the elevation of the aerial..?

Hmmm I always did find that a little annoying that it wasn't effected back in T1.

O, and CoCo man do you look close at these images ^_^

You didn't find it so? I always found the zone of coverage of the radio station greatly increased if you built it on a hill. True enough that it was always perfectly round rather than accomodating to the terrain, but the circumference was greater at a higher altitude.

I didn't have much experience with the TV station which made the zone of coverage particularly important.

BTW, Newspapers have a zone of coverage also. I simply assumed it was fixed, e.g. unaffected by altitude.

Do you see any indication that T3 has different buildings for radio and TV stations? Or does one Soviet Communications Tower serve both purposes?

Looking good, the cities look like real cities, and look bustling (I am getting worried that I will be exposed as having city building tendencies......), even without people on the streets.

Like the pyramids, ships etc, looking very nice.

I have to. El_Prez told me in his "twitter" that a Showgirl was looking for me. So I had to look for her.

And what did I find ?? There she was making "nice" with some handsome Tourist. What kind of respect is that? Either hers or El_Prez's? Did he send her to look for me or was he reading her thoughts?

Perhaps all the Showgirls in T3 have the thought, "If only I could meet the Coconut Kid, I'd have a better life."

All I can say is, you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you meet Coconut Kid.
