MyBB Cafe Tropico has to move!
Cafe Dave, the administrator, has been notified by Gamespy that the Cafe must be moved before August 31, 2009.

Cafe Dave: What this means is that I will need to find a new host for the site and forum. But don't worry, I don't plan to close the doors, just move for now.

RE: Cafe Tropico has to move!
Wish you guys the best of luck and a smooth transition to your new host. Be sure to drop us a note once you have a new address.

We will gladly serve as a "backup" for Tropico discussion in the meantime or if anything should go wrong.

Big Grin Cafe Tropico's lighter side.
Thank you Timo!
That is very kind!

Perhaps some folks would like to visit a "lighter side" thread at the Cafe.

Here is the message you get at that address:

Quote:Hackers have staged a coup and Cafe Tropico's continued existence is in peril. We are searching for a suitable backup file. In the meantime, you may discuss games and the rest of the day's leisures at The Next Level Forum.

Quite surprised to hear of this.

Hackers, why did they do so? a revenge frm them?

Hoping the Cafe will have a new house soon.

Hoping the Cafe will have a new house soon.

Who knows the mind of a malicious hacker.

The hacker probably didn't even know that the Cafe was there, so it is highly unlikely that any "revenge" on the Cafe was involved.

As I understand the event, a "server" holding several sites was involved; a hacker exploited a vulnerability in one of the sites to gain access to the controls of the server itself. Then he proceeded to start deleting the sites there in sequence, and got several of them before administrators were alerted and regained control. Apparently, all the affected sites had backups except for the Cafe Tropico portion.

So the Cafe still has a home; there is just no data to put in it. Or at least none that has been discovered so far.

So all the data lost without any way to recover ?

Omg, my hoard was stashed there and nothing left. Sad

New lesson collected, anything may happen in this world anytime, anywhere...

DELETE

Yes - that word means it is gone away forever. UNLESS you are a national military intelligence or national police agency with super-expensive equipment operated by technicians paid in the hundreds of dollars per hour to read ghosts of data not otherwise useable. Even then you may not have success.

And the ordinary or even commercial web site operator is not going to have that capability.

There is a glimmer of hope for your "hoard" -- a file over a year old has been found which may be used to restore the Cafe. But there will be the loss of at least a year's worth of posts.

This fact makes me hurt...

It looks like Lehman Brothers had gone away and left many with empty hands...

The feeling is I still got a wealth and went to bed with my nice dream yesterday, but when I get up today I lost everything...No....

No other way than to recover the memory in my brain what I stashed in the cafe ? No...No...No...Sad Sad Sad

Exclamation RE: Cafe Tropico has to move!
The Cafe Tropico has been "restored" with an "as-of" date (late in the day) of:

August 18, 2009!

That means that about one year and eight months of posts have been lost. Most of them were mine, so those sad and those happy are probably evenly divided.

Whoa! what happened?!?

Has everyone been banned form the Cafe - or is it just me?
I'm assuming a mass ban due to all the spam?

Sorry you lost all your posts CK.

Hi 'Bean,

You assumed correctly - it's everyone. CafeDave had added some up-to-date speed-bumps to the registration routine after the '09 move, and they were among the lost stuff. So the spam-bots moved in and the place was out of control.

Hopefully CafeDave will stop by and fix things; he's the last hope. Meanwhile, it may be that "Guests" can brouse the Google Cached version. I can't because even the cached version knows me - cookie or ISP.

It hurts a bit to lose a lot of posts, but mainly it's some of the lists of codes that are tiresome to reconstruct. Otherwise, there are so few interested in T1 that it makes little difference. It's inconvenient not to have a place where the rare question can be asked and answered.

Best wishes, CK

Smile RE: Cafe Tropico has to move!
The inadvertent, universal lockdown which applied to registered users has been fixed so Cafe Tropico is open to registered users again.

Cool

Yes! I was silly and stupid enough not to make a fringe issue complicated by dipping into the difference between registered users and guests; and about the effect of "cookies" which the ordinary surfer has to disallow or to allow - then vomit collectively. That's user "friendly" software for you.

Ah...so you finally purged your cookies.
I never had the issue of being denied access to viewing the Café this last month.
Did you try logging in again and seeing if the login scripting is allowing that as they still don't accept new registrations.

You are incorrect on a couple of points. I didn't touch my 'cookies' and the global lockdown for registered users is lifted. Yes, it was always possible - apparently - for guests without a cookie to read the forum. They could also use the "Google" cached version with less problem than someone with an unvomited cookie.

A spammer posted three times today -- I didn't take note of when he had registered.

I am not privy to just what the administrator and moderators are doing. Concurrent with the re-opening is the elimination of at least two dozen spammers -- bots or sweated humans.

I suspect sweated human spammers lay "MOLE" registrations to which they can return -- expecting some time lapse to free their new registrant posting restriction.
