Currently, Amazon Downloads does not have a digital version of Modern Times available for preorder, just a $30 retail copy. However, GamersGate has the expansion available for preorder for $16. If I bought the base game off of Amazon Downloads, will I be able to purchase the expansion from GamersGate and use them together, or do I have to download it from Amazon/use a retail version? Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure Amazon.com will add a digital version of Modern Times shortly. Alternatively, all versions of the game with the exception of Steam should work with the Modern Times DLC download from our own site (http://launcher.kalypsomedia.com/) - in fact, if your Launcher news window lists the current DLCs, you will be able to purchase Modern Times from the same site once it releases on March 28th.

The binaries are probably almost identical --- the only difference being a few trivial things. Steam, on the other hand, imports the Steamworks API, which, obviously, would require Steam.

EDIT for clarity (Assumptions ahoy):
To get the expansion, it probably uses a similar mechanism to the DLC: the DLC would be dumped into Steam's database, rather than Kalypso's key-enabling one.

I'd just like a quick clarification, I've bought the boxed Tropico 4 and activated it through the Kalypso launcher and have purchased all three DLC's. However, I've pre-ordered Modern Times from GamersGate as they had a good pre-order deal going. (19.99 to 16.95 if you pre-order) and I'd just like a clarification that Modern Times from GamersGate will be able to work with the Tropico 4 Kalypso Launcher version.

You should be fine. Actually, I believe GamersGate will provide you with a code to redeem via the Launcher. Upon successful activation, it will be tied to your account so you can always download Modern Times and all your other DLCs from any machine with the game installed where you log into your Kalypso Launcher account. I hope that helps.

In any case, if anyone has any issues getting their version of Modern Times to run with the base game, email support@kalypsomedia.com
