Steam DRM problems
I preordered the game two weeks in advance and i've yet to play it.

I've had two problems so far, a message telling me that the game was unavailable which i have solved but now the next problem is that when i click to play the game will appear to be launching and the cursor will change to state. A process will appear for a second, close down, the cursor will change back to the pointer and nothing will have happened. I've been asking around and i'm struggling to get an answer, it would be great to get some help but it appears that i've been screwed over by steam. I doubt i'll even get that steam exclusive ghost ship. Sad

I feel for your pain, but you will likely get help faster by contacting the Steam support. https://support.steampowered.com/

RE: Steam DRM problems
Here's another thing to try as we've just had a user report the following: If you start a different game before launching Port Royale 3 in Steam, the game will actually start properly. The different game in this specific instance was Jagged Alliance: Back in Action, but it may actually be worth to try different games as well.

RE: Steam DRM problems
I'll try the demo of Jagged Alliance: Back in Action, it should yeild the same result as i've tried MW3 and Portal 2, i've got Tropico 3 in my collection it hasn't been downloaded yet. The demo is a smaller download and it looks like a very promising fix as the game has also been made by kalypso.

RE: Steam DRM problems
I don't think it may have anything to do with the fact that it's a Kalypso game, particularly as JABIA doesn't even use the Kalypso Launcher, but hey, this is a first lead that may be worth investigating.

RE: Steam DRM problems
Nope, i tried everything. I launched Port Royale whilst i was in the demo mission of Jagged Alliance, i tried Alt-F4'ing and quickly swaping in to no avail. It seems that this method isn't really going to work for me unless i just keep trying different games which i'm not sure would even work.

Anyways, i'm off to bed now, i'll be back in 8 or so hours and hopefully i can get the game up and running tomorrow. Smile

Same problem here with steam version and with port royale 2 on steam and GOG.

Port royale 3 runs fine at first but now I have this problem similar to port royale 2

RE: Steam DRM problems
Just an update here, i can confirm that the problem is 100% to do with steam as playing the game via disk is working out well, even though i won't get that ghost ship. Sad

I hope they are like other game devs like mount and blade where you could download the games from where you bought them and register in their forums and being able to use your serial to download the game from their site.

Its annoying when steam has a lot of problems, I know this game doesn't require much power so I wanted to use my mac on this one.

Any Windows 7 users affected by the Steam launch error (appcrash or no error message at all)?

Nothing. It never starts and never display any error whatsoever.

It only displays that box saying starting port royale 3 or something and then nothing happens

Hi everyone, the isolated Steam launch issue is identified and will be fixed via a Steam auto update shortly.

Thanks for your patience and support through all of this! Please accept our sincerest apologies for the inconvenience caused.

Words cannot describe my gratitude at finally being able to play this game properly.

Steam update (1.1.2-24694) is now available, launch issues should be resolved once and for all. Thanks for your patience!

Finally. Now the game works as it should almost a week after the release....
Well, I'll stay away from any future Kalypsomedia releases until there is enough feedback on them.
DRM = tends to be a shot in the publishers own foot.

Well, this was not really a Kalypso Launcher only problem. It turned out to be a very nasty bug with memory allocation conflicting with the Steam API features but we're glad the fix worked and resolved the issue.
