Combat questions
Combat is a very important part of this (or any 4X game) so I thought we can have a thread about it and ask some questions.

I'll start.

Will flanking be used during combat? So will we have weapons which can fire only forward (or have limited radius), hence we could use flanking manouevers to get out of the firing radius of enemy ships?

Also, when we create our own designs and add modules, will there be an option to add weapons which will have certain firing radius (eg. 45 deg, 90, 190, 360 deg)?

And would a weapon that can fire in 360deg be less powerful then a weapon that can fire only forward?

And last question, will there be weapons which would fire one powerful shot which would take long time to charge?

Thanks

RE: Combat questions
I'm guessing none of these features are in the game since they would answered these questions by now Smile.

RE: Combat questions
There is no evidence of firing arcs in the design screen so...

Shield tech
What about shield tech? In the pics and videos I have not seen any "force field" shield hits on ships.

Oh damn. Nearly overlooked this thread. Sorry.

So yeah, well, firing arcs are still subject to change. Can't say much about that at this point.

As for shields: They are in the game. In various forms and sizes. Here is a pic of an Arthrox ship using shields against a X'or attack:

Thanks foir the reply. It would be good if the firing arcs were in, I think they would make battles more tactical.

RE: Combat questions
I really don't understand why weapons wouldn't have limited fire arcs if turrets are modelled on the ships, or?

Another interesting thing I would like to know is how advanced the damage system in the game is, will we see ship being damaged to have diminished capacity. Such as an interesting critical hit type of system where engines, navigation, sensors and weapon system is damaged/destroyed during combat.

One of the biggest flaws with most 4x games (and most other computer games for that matter) is that simple hit-points are used, this just make tactical manoeuvring pretty pointless in most games. You must always concentrate your fire-power at one single target until it is gone because that targets fire-power is either 100% or 0%, no point in dividing your fire-power as you would in reality. In reality vessels (of all kinds) are usually damaged to some degree after battle, much more so than completely destroyed. This is even more true for larger vessels such as naval ships, just look at WWII as one example how it could be like when large vessels combat each other.

So, could you give out any details about the damage system against ships in the game?

RE: Combat questions
hi i just found out about this game and am wondering about the damage system in it

having played sins rebellion i enjoyed the battles but the only let down was the fact the ships had hit points so will their be something like weapon turrets take dmg they become less effective same with other ship systems ?

Did you by chance ever play Star Wars: Empire at War?

The larger ships in that game had a set amount of hitpoints made up by hardpoints (engines, shields, missile launchers, turrets, etc). These individual hardpoints had their own set of hitpoints and as such could be destroyed.

A system similar to that would be (in my opinion) much better than a generic ship hitpoints system.

RE: Combat questions
Each ship has four different sub-systems that can be damaged individually. If you have the right technology, you can specifically target those sub-systems and for example destroy some of the reactors.

That is also why there is an energy storage on each ship that takes up additional energy if you put in more reactors than you need. If some of the reactors get destroyed, the ship can still use the extra energy.

RE: Combat questions
that sounds pretty good with the sub systems been able to be destroyed makes for inserting tactics.

also like to know say i just had a big fleet battle and won it with alot of my ships damaged and then another battle with that same fleet happened the next turn would my ships still be damaged or will they be fully repaired ?

RE: Combat questions
some time ago I asked if a battle is finished in one turn or if the fighting continues over multiple turn - that way reinforcement can reach the system in time to turn the tides...
and they said that a battle over multiple turns is possible
resetting the damage in one turn wouldn't be helpful in that regard
and one would loose the fun that is in space-repairstations and/or (repair-)support ships

RE: Combat questions
Shield will recharge slowly. But armor will not if you do not have a ship with a repair module or a repair dock nearby.
