Thinking of buying Tropico 4, but...
I played Tropico 1 plus Paradise Island as a kid for years, and never got bored of it. When Tropico 3 came out I waited a bit for the price to go down, but then Tropico 4 came out soon after. Now Tropico 4 is down to ~$17 and I really want to get it. However, looking at the gameplay videos on Youtube Tropico 4 takes a way different turn from Tropico 1. What I loved about the original Tropico was how the cities reminded me of the Caribbean. Pics I see of the new on look way too modern for the Caribbean. Skyscrapers, nuclear plants...space shuttles??? It feels like Sim City. The highest development you would see in the Caribbean are mid-sized buildings like banks and luxury hotels.

But perhaps this is only the modern expansion pack? Tell me if I'm wrong...

The stereotypical Caribbean "Banana Republic" is becoming outdated now, with Trinidad and Tobago classified as a high-income country being a prime counterexample. But yeah you're right the skyscrapers and space shuttles only come with the Modern Times expansion pack. Nuke plants are available in Tropico 4, but you have the option of not building it, unlike in MT where you can no longer build older buildings once the upgrades are unlocked

I understand your point, but the majority of the Caribbean is still pretty poor (Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and other poor islands). Most of the middle-high income countries are small islands with small populations.

I guess what I liked about the original Tropico was the emphasis on the developing Caribbean like Cuba and DR over the really touristy and capitalized islands. That's really what made Tropico unique for me. It's not that I don't like nuclear plants or skyscrapers, but for that I can play Sim City or Cities XL, which specialize in that type of game. Anyways, that's just my impression from the gameplay I've been looking. Thanks for the reply...

I am also thinking about buying Tropico 4 and Modern Times, but I'm a bit concerned there are game-breaking bugs like the uprising one that still haven't been fixed.

Is the game going to be getting another patch?

Only game breaking bug I encountered was one of the mission critical secret agents on mission 18 never showed up, and Kalypso's tech support is about as helpful as a mosquito with malaria.

It's doubtful we'll ever get to see another official patch.
