Play in a Window
You can't set this as an option in game, and I wanted to play in a window. The configuration file in the Tropico 3 directory was compressed and thankfully the format was straightforward.
To install just overwrite the "config.lua" file in the Tropico 3 directory with "config - windowed rununfocused.lua" file in the zip.

Incredible, thanks!!! Now I'll finally buy the full version instead of just playing the demo.
One minor thing though: is there any way to move the window around on the screen, instead of having it stuck in the center?

Wait, your *only* reason for buying our game was that it could run in a window?

I like to run my TV tuner while I play simulation or strategy games, so windowed mode is definitely a deal breaker for me.
The Alt+Space key fix works, thanks Agent!
Also, BTW: the lua file fix works just as well on the Steam version of the game in case anyone was wondering.

Thank you for this, it works very well on my system, except that the resolution sets back at 1024x768 every time I restart the game.
Is there a way to save the setting ? (1600x1024 is what works best for me)
I've checked your config.lua, and it's not "read-only".
Thx again !

It is working fine for me too. Thank you. I am playing. It is enjoyable. Everybody can get fun from it. Thank you all guys for guiding us to play well. I do not find any difficulty. Nobody can get any trouble. To move the game window you just need to press the Alt+Space keys and select the move-window menu and move it by pressing the cursor keys and Alt+Space does work too.

@OlaHaldor: Yes you have an in-game setting (under Options>Video) to set up the game resolution. When using this windowed-mode tweak, this will change the actual size of the game window.
Hope that answers your question

RE: Play in a Window
Hey guys, i tried using this to get the windowed mode but it wouldnt work! is there something i did wrong? or is itbecause of the new patch they recently added?
The reason i need the windowed mode is because no game (no matter how old or new) wont play in fullscreen without having frame problem (sort of laggy) or the mouse pointer turns invisible but still works.
maybe its my graphics card? ATI Radeon hd 3400.
For some reason when i put game slike dragon age or aoe 3 in windowed mode they work perfectly.. but when i play them in fullscreen it wont work.
I dont care on fixing this problem because sony has a terrible service to assist me with it.. but i would just like to get this game to work on window mode. any suggestions?
Thanks in advance =)

RE: Play in a Window
Ok i was told that my graphic card (ati radeon hd 3400) is the issue and it doesnt support the game. So unless Kalypso or who ever is responsible can add the windowed feature it will never work. So i will keep my fingers crossed that one of these days they will provide this to their customers.
I want you guys to understand that i'm not the only one that plays games in windowed mode, and if you add this your sales will go up. just a friendly advice.

Thanks Gonbon! Awesome stuff. No idea how to work with .LUA files, so this is a lifesaver. And Thanks for the mirrors, StupidWeasel!

I was wondering the same thing and I think I figured it out: Set your intended (windowed) resolution BEFORE using the windowed mod config file. If you're already using the windowed mod, quit and replace the config file back with the backup/original. Now run the game (full screen) and set your intended (windowed) res and quit. Finally, replace the config file with the windowed mod and it should use the last resolution used (for-EV-er!). That made it seem more complicated than it really is, I'm pretty good at that...
Also, after a few hours I'm not seeing any stability issues at all.
(Sorry for the bump, but I think/hope this is useful info.)

RE: Play in a Window
Count me in as another player who wants to be able to run games in windowed mode. I want to be able to chat with my friends online while I'm playing. The absence of a windowed option is a deal-breaker for me. I was planning to buy Tropico 4, but first I'll make sure it's not full-screen only.
chrono and assen, I find your attitude disappointing. Gonbon wouldn't have had to provide a "little hack" if you had given your players the option they wanted. But instead of supplying that option, you're criticizing the players who request it ("Wait, your *only* reason for buying our game was that it could run in a window?").
The reason I bought Tropico 3 was because I enjoyed Tropico and Tropico 2 so much. But I'm not too thrilled to have ended up with a game that prevents me from doing anything else on my computer while I'm playing it.
