RE: Tropico 3 will not start
I bought and installed T3 yesterday and had the same problem. I also had tried the demo without difficulties. There is no error given, it is just Vista's wonderful message "This program has stopped working" and then Windows tries unsuccessfully to find a solution and it closes before it starts. None of the game compatibility settings like above helped. I checked the apps data directory and it saves some log files and also a crash file in this case. Opening it with Notebook showed that most of the video calls failed, pointing to the graphics card/driver. I installed the latest drivers for my ATI Radeon HD 4650 and it successfully loaded the program and I was able to enter the serial code. You may want to check the log files to see. In Vista they appear in the directory: C:\Users\...\AppData\Roaming\Tropico 3\crashes or \logs.
After all this, when I went into a game file, either the tutorial or new sandbox game, the screen was filled with flat planes of colour and it was unusable. The in-game settings did nothing to help. I rolled back the graphics driver and did a few unsuccessful windows rollbacks too but nothing helped. Today however it works, so go figure. In any case, it was not a happy install and one should not have to go through all this pain.

RE: Tropico 3 will not start
I get a Critical Error message tell me when i go to play the game saying "You need a supported DX9-compatible video card with a recent driver to play this game.". What do i need that this message is telling I need?
Is it a better video card?

RE: Tropico 3 will not start
Hey guys, I've had the same problem and here's what worked for me,
I went in C:\Users\"my username"\AppData\Roaming\Tropico 3 and erased everything in it. This will erase your saved games but it's totally better than not playing. I guess you could copy them somewhere and copy them back.

RE: Tropico 3 will not start
Hi guys
Running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and I was having the same problems as all the guys listed above. I tried updating video, sound, processor, etc. etc. drivers. I'm running an AMD hex 1055T core with 4 gigs ram and an AMD 5870 1gb - so I definitely met minimum requirements.
Eventually I tried fiddling with the compatibility options and ran it under every operating system all unsuccessfully. Then I played around with the other options and found that simply disabling desktop composition worked for me. Nothing else. Not even trying under a different OS compatibility. That worked for me.
Good luck all!
