RE: Can't start the game, log says: COULDN'T FIND OR PARSE MAP FILE
Is there an update from the devs/support about this error? It should be noted I still haven't received confirmation from support that they have received my log files and crash dumps.. Two weeks of being unable to play a game paid for..

RE: Can't start the game, log says: COULDN'T FIND OR PARSE MAP FILE
I read all these posts about folks who can't get the game to run or folks in NA who can't even buy the game or folks whose computer crashes every time they reach 200 houses. My sympathies to all of you. But like so many tech issues this one isn't consistent. I must have been blessed by the tech-gods because I live in the US , run a Vista 64bit machine, and even film video while I play with zero issues. I've played many hours on the Ultra video settings. Note - when using video capture I have to run on low video settings but I think that is related to the video capture software, not GAR. I had one crash and that was with Ultra video settings and 476 houses on the map; I tried to extend an aqueduct (shooting for 500 houses) and it crashed when I dragged the aqueduct over a trade post.

I know that many of you are very frustrated; I would be too. Hopefully you will get relief soon because the expansion is good, the new buildings and functionality are solid additions, and the new maps and missions are challenging.

RE: Can't start the game, log says: COULDN'T FIND OR PARSE MAP FILE
I bought the Gold edition from Steam and have been having the same problem. I am running Vista 64bit with 2x GTX285 and I have the latest Drivers etc. After trying many things including re-downloading, I tried to launch it from the game folder and got a message saying something about DirectX failed or could not find file.
I have downloaded the DirectX End User Runtime (link Below), installed and rebooted system and it works perfectly now. Hope this helps!

It seems that I solved the problem for me too.
I reinstalled DirectX and it worked. Smile Then I remembered that I had disconnected my second monitor yesterday. I quiet the game, reconnected it and I coudn't start the game again. (No matter if the second monitor is on or off). After pluging the DVI cable out, the game worked again. Smile

This is a third party software conflict, we are still trying to track down the culprit.

This is most definitely NOT a third party conflict issue. Deleting the subdirectory created by the game in App Data/Roaming solves the problem. If as you erroneously claim, it were a third party issue, then the game wouldn't play without issue the first time. As Direct X and C++ are both installed and up to date on my system, but I was still having the issue, your response shows the typical lack of concern and general laziness exhibited by all too many gaming companies once they have released a bug-filled game. Ostrich syndrome. Deleting the above mentioned directory instantly solved the problem

RE: Can't start the game, log says: COULDN'T FIND OR PARSE MAP FILE
For those who have 2 displays connected (I have primary monitor and secondary FullHD TV connected to a single video card):
1. Disconnect a secondary display physically or using video card control panel
2. Start the game
3. If it starts Ok, then change the default game resolution from 1440x900 to something else (in my case I changed to 1920x1200)
4. Exit the game
5. Reconnect secondary display and try to start the game again

I hope this could help with your crashes issue

Turning off the second monitor works for me. Changing resolution then turning it back on fails tho. I have to turn it off in the nvidia control panel before playing.

Second monitor issue here also
Turning off works, but is not something I want to have to live with long term. Can Kalypso patch this to include windowed mode support perhaps?

Well, now I noticed that I also have this issue. My crash log is telling COULDN'T FIND OR PARSE MAP FILE as well, so I guess that my own thread about the issue wasn't very necessary.

The problem here is just that I don't have two monitors! So what could I do to fix this now? Sad

Well, I managed to fix the issue. If someone is interested how I did it, I wrote down the instructions in my own thread.

RE: Can't start the game, log says: COULDN'T FIND OR PARSE MAP FILE
I'm having the same problem. Was playing just fine, then got kicked off and now I can't load my game. I click on the saved game, then the screen goes black and GAR kicks me off. It will let me start a new game, but I don't want to lose all of my progress and I'm afraid that I'll just get kicked off again.

I'm using Windows XP, I just got a new video card, I only have one monitor, I re-installed DirectX - oh and I bought the CD version of GAR:Gold Edition at Target, not on-line.

I'm banging my head against the wall here!!

I have the crash file if that helps

Help!

It seems that most people with this problem have two monitors including me. The solution is to either unplug one/ disable one in the display window or chose to clone both monitors. However It would be really nice if kalypso came out with a patch so that people with two monitors can play the game at least on one of them. I enjoy gaming with two even if the game only shows on one because I usually have something like my tv tuner or youtube on the other while I play.

As i wrote in this thread: http://forum.kalypsomedia.com/showthread...7#pid99597

There is another solution:

Download the config.lua file from this thread: http://forum.kalypsomedia.com/showthread.php?tid=2746

It will run the game in windowed mode... (I am using it on Grand Ages:Rome so its working for this game too)...
It works well with both my monitors enabled...

This will allow you to run with two monitors without the mouse being locked, so you can use it for other things as well...

RE: Can't start the game, log says: COULDN'T FIND OR PARSE MAP FILE
Hi,

I just registered to post the solution that worked for me.

Version: Steam GA:R + RoA DLC (win7 64bit)
Problem: The so often mentioned immediate Crash to Desktop when starting the game with "COULDN'T FIND OR PARSE MAP FILE" issue in the crash.log

Solution (worked for me): for some reason the latest version of the game is not able to create the file "rome.map" in the "...\username\AppData\Roaming\ReignOfAugustus" folder (not even when starting the game as Admin or in compatibility mode or what so ever so this issue is NOT a perms issue or 3rd party software but something to do with the game itself+ eventually some OS configurations). Another thing I noticed is that the folder created when the game is started is called "ReignOfAugustus" and NOT "Reign of Augustus".

I created an empty file "rome.map" and placed it in the "...\Roaming\ReignOfAugustus" folder and this worked for me. I could start the game, enter the serial number and play the game. Strange is that the file rome.map stays empty even if I play the game so I don't know what this file is for.

I also have 2 monitors and I can play the game without problems with this "workaround", full screen and even with NVIDIA 3D Vision activated (driver version: 285.27 beta)

I don't know if this works for everybody but it worked for me. So maybe you can give it a try and the devs can take a look at it and find a fix for it.

Regards

RE: Can't start the game, log says: COULDN'T FIND OR PARSE MAP FILE
Hello everyone, I'm all new to this game series, so I really wanted to play the DEMO. However, I received "COULDN'T FIND OR PARSE MAP FILE" the error in demo, and like many of you, couldn't fix it with any of the solutions here.

I run a WIndows XP SP3, 8600 GT, 2 GB Ram and simply nothing works

However, I tried searching some another solution and it worked
Here is what I did.

1- Go to Control Panel, click on "Region and Language Settings".
2- Click on the Advanced Settings Tab, where "Non-Unicode Program Language" can be adjusted
3- Change the "Non-Unicode Program Language" to "English(US)"
4- It would require you to insert the Windows XP Installation Disc. Do as you are told.
5- After that the computer would restart. Take out the Windows XP Installation Disk.
6- The Computer should run normally. Select your account and you should see Desktop, as usual.
7- Run the game. It should work fine now!

Apparently the game cannot display the words in menu, gaming etc when the above is not set. I suspect this because my windows is a Traditional Chinese version. So please don't pick on my instructions because all of them are in Chinese - I have done my best to translate them to English, and this is all I can do.

I don't fully understand how it works either. Anyway, hope it helps and good luck!

RE: Can't start the game, log says: COULDN'T FIND OR PARSE MAP FILE
To let you all know, my error (can not parse map file) was fixed by simply switching off my secondary display and then starting the game (haven't tried changing settings etc yet to try to keep second display on).

I am running windows 7 64 bit too. Didn't try anything else so I know for a fact this was the cause and the fix!

Good luck.

RE: Can't start the game, log says: COULDN'T FIND OR PARSE MAP FILE
Ok heres another option for the dual screen problem in Windows 7 64bit. Try setting your INGAME Resolution to the same settings as your screen settings. my screens are 1280x1024 and my ingame settings were different. changed ingame settings to 1280x1024 and game runs fine with BOTH screens. Hope this helps some people.....
