Can't start the game, log says: COULDN'T FIND OR PARSE MAP FILE

Sad Can't start the game, log says: COULDN'T FIND OR PARSE MAP FILE
Hey,

I just bought the game via steam, and I cannot startup the game.
I get a black screen with the mouse cursor,...

here is the the thing from the crashlog:

Error: Access violation
Remarks:

Anyone who knows this issue or who can help me?

I just dispatched the full log, with DxDiag to Kalypsomedia to weed out the bug. Hopefully, they have an idea what may be causing this. I believe it's fair to say that those who buy the game via steam might encounter this problem, and it needs to be adressed.

Which game did you download? Grand Ages Rome main game, Reign of Augustus expansion or both at the same time?

I have bought and downloaded both. Steam installs the main game and Reign of August as DLC pack

Please try to verify the game cache integrity (right-click on Grand Ages Rome in your games list tab, choose 'Properties', 'Local Files' and click 'Verify integrity of game cache'). Your game should launch fine afterwards.

Hi Timo,

Sorry to say but nope, it doesn't work.
I even reinstalled my pc, installed steam, installed the game, but still nothing,... even after verify integrity,...

I have the same problem:
It works if only GA:R is installed. When I install the expansion and hit the "Start Game now" box, then the game works. If I quiet and start it again (with or without admin-rights) it crashs and the log shows this error.
If I start the installation of the expansion pack again I can start the game, but only once.

Windows 7, 64Bit, bought and downloaded the game at gamesload.de (so not only the STEAM version is affected.)

This error seems to be related to a missing third-party software on your machine. These components (like DirectX and Visual C++) are usually installed automatically but can cause conflicts in some environments. We will compile a list of the required software and report back with our findings.

Hello,

I had installed Visual C++ 2010 BETA. After reading your post, I deinstalled it and everything else with Visual C++ in the "programs and functions" list. Then I reinstalled the mission pack. Now the Visual C++ 2005 redistributional (64bit) has been installed automaticly, but the game still is not starting.

Well many people seem to have this problem,... I wonder, is anyone who bought the game via steam able to play?

Yes, people are reporting positive feedback on the game's Steam forum. Plus, we are unable to reproduce the error you're describing on any of our testing machines. However, the problem is being forwarded to the developers to look into.

Hello.

Maybe I've a solution. Cause this problem occurs after a week on my computer, I searched every path and try to reinstall after deinstall the game more then 5 times. In every new installation the error occured again and there was no campaign or free game.

But then I tried something else:

I delete the files and the folder on:

C:\Users\Marc\AppData\Roaming\Reign of Augustus.

But I don't delete them from the paperbasket!

Then I start rome.exe roa new, he wants the serialnumber again, then I quit the program and transfer back some of the files from the paperbasket with the old folder to the new folder C:\Users\Marc\AppData\Roaming\Reign of Augustus. Not all, but the files without content I replace with the files with content from the paperbasket. Then I startet again rome.exe roa and... start a free game and the game doesn't quit - it start and I can now play.

Is it possible that something could be corrupted in the folder
C:\Users\Marc\AppData\Roaming\Reign of Augustus. I've a look at this and see if this works and how long it takes for a new crash.

No, for me this is not working. After deleting the folder, I started the game but it crashed again immediatly. The folder was recreated before the game crashed.

It's been over a week since I sent an email to support@kalypsomedia.com with crash logs and everything as per Timo's suggestion. Nothing has been heard since, nor have I had any acknowledgement that my message has been received.

Snap up, Kalypso, we're paying for a game that at the moment just sits there, taking hard drive space. Please at least post the list of third party software that we must have installed.

Would really like to play it some time soon...

We have tested the game (both Steam and non-Steam versions) on 64 bit versions of Windows Vista and 7 extensively. There are no known issues.

This is a third party software conflict, we are still trying to track down the culprit.

Timo, if it is third party conflict, why is it then that after a clean windows 7 install the game also doesn't work? (or you mean windows with 3 party software?)

As it says "Access violation" I monitored the boot with Sysinternals FileMon & RegMon and noticed, that the game could not create the file "rome.map" int the installfolder of the game. It complained about the name. I tried to create an empty file with this name and started the game. Now the Log-entry changed from "Function: COULDN'T FIND OR PARSE MAP FILE" to "Function: unknown" but the error remained. Deleting the emty file changed the log-entry back.
