Rolleyes The Art of flyovers
The Art of Flyovers
I was going to post this in the tips thread city builder made, but my post was too big so I've put it in a new thread. I have found some sort of glitch that's absolutely amazing!

If you've been playing for a while and you find your roads are becomming over crowded then try making flyovers!

1) First build a straight road:

2) Then build a road up to it, but not so it's connecting. It has to be in the "next square" over.

3) Now you'll find that it won't connect to the road properly, don't worry this means you've got it at the right distance away.

4) However, building on the "next square" on the other side means you are allowed to place the road there. Try it! It is not a real cross road, the roads are seperate so that it acts as an actual fly over!

5) you can extend on this by building "Motorways/Freeways". Try placing two roads very close to each other. To do this you'll need to start a road that is literaly the next square over, as in the green box should be right up against the other road:

6) Now take the other road and extend it past the other one, but this time in little sections. This stops the roads from trying to join up, so that it can be dead straight.
Carry on doing this by alternating the road you extend each time until you have a motorway across the island. When you get used to this you can put tight curves in the road too!

And there you go. Have fun and go nuts! Make sure you have plenty of garages to take the car's off the road. It is always better to build away from your main roads as when people get to a destination the car will stop and the traffic will build up behind it. So if your buildings are down side roads the cars will get clear of the main road before stopping.

This works on both the xbox 360 and the pc, however I found it alot harder to place the roads on the pc.

To the game developers, if this glitch/bug/artefact is an issue, please don't eradicate it but instead replace it with very beautiful flyovers like the kind you might find in malaysia or so.

Wow, a great glitch. A little ugly, I will admit. But I definitely like the idea of a motorway!

RE: The Art of flyovers
Tried making a flyover on my current island last night (PC version), but couldn't make it happen. I'll have to try again in sandbox, with a nice flat island. I'm surprised there aren't more comments on this today, as it seems quite a find.
By the way- in the U.S. it's called an "overpass". Complicated setups like the picture of Malaysia is called an "interchange".

Look at some of the 'flyovers' in Dubai, they're amazingly beautiful!

seems practical, i always wanted to make "bridges" or crossovers to ease traffic.

RE: The Art of flyovers
I had 3 overpasses in my latest challenge. Used them to alleviate congestion at "T" intersections with high left turn traffic. Just extended the T leg across the straight road, then curled back 180 degrees, so all the left turns are now rights. Worked great.
I was playing "The Kropak Incident", by Hightoy. Topography prevents setting up a good mega-loop, so dealing with T's is more important. On future islands, I'll leave plenty of open space around my major intersections, so I can make flyovers later if they get too crowded.

This could be huge to ease congestion.

How does the graphics handle the cars on the lower road? Do they disappear and reappear as they go under?

As for the motorway, surely it just looks like a motorway. Surely the traffic still goes both ways on each strip of raod. It doesn't go the same way with overtaking??

RE: The Art of flyovers
Graphics are not impressive. The cars on the lower road run right over the upper road, traffic just runs right through each other without crashing. At least once I have seen a car stop on the lower road when a car is right there on the other road, but very rarely.

I have not built a motorway, and doubt that I would. I don't think it would look that cool, because it's not really two lanes in each direction. In addition, if I've got so much traffic crossing the island, I don't think it's an efficient design. Better to have two parallel roads separated enough that you have access to more land for development.

There is no lower road. Sorry to go all neo on ya but even though our mortal eyes perceive the roads as upper and lower the case is not true. Infact, if you rotate the camera round you may find that the roads flip over sometimes! The cars themselves will just drive across them (and through each other!)

Yeah there's no real pratical use unless you want to double up your roads and reduce the gap between. Normaly if you try to build roads side by side you'll have a tough time, but doing it this way allows two roads to be practically touching each other. You could build a big tree network all doubled up using flyovers to cross over each other. This way you have the same layout, but double the capacity!
