how can i increase my population?
i am playing sandbox, and i am at December 1960, i have tons of stuff, built plenty of tenements/apartments immigration center and selected open immigration, even have college and high school police station, i just built a lot, but my main issue is my population wont go over 100, my people are starving (i built marketplace) and my dock only has 1 worker, built more farms no one will work at them, even raised salaries. Still nothing. i even have a 59% happiness rating.

Any ideas?

Also garage wise, i put them by my tements and by workplaces, but is there like a max distance then there not effective anymore? Or it dont really matter how far away they are from each other?

Thanks in advance.

#1 tip: never build your city too fast or your economy will go way down.
#2 tip: The garages range doesn't matter but be careful to leave space near the garage so when it becomes full, the other will be used.
#3 tip: The immigrants aren't coming because either your not fast forwarding or you might not have a clinic ( will cause people to die without clinics.)
#4 tip: Yeah, the starving says it all. Starving people = DEATH TO ALL TROPICANS!!!
#5 tip: Never ever, raise the wages of the farmers unless they are disrespectful to you.Cool

I disagree with those too.

Having a clinic has no direct impact on immigration at all. You are right on deaths to lacking healthcare (which can effect landed immigrants after some time of course), but it won't scare them off - at least not more then any other unfulfilled citizien need. What does matter however is average payment. If it is below carribean average, less or no immigrants will come to Tropico. And that's why I don't think #5 is right - giving farmers (or better all uneducated) a wage raise can dramatically increase immigration, because it will raise your average wage a lot (because there are lots of uneducated jobs)

Dunno if you've enabled ingame events.
There might be an outbreak of the Llama flu, putting your island under quarentine. You might have missed the message.

RE: how can i increase my population?
Hi all!

I started sandbox game on the Coco Chico island and I was trying to play without immigrants.

Game settings are:
- Political stability: Unstable
- World economy: FAB 20%, EPM 0%
- Tourism: -20%
- Game length: 1950-2000
- Population: 70
- Random events: Normal
- Prominent faction: Militarists
- Far away place: Off
- Rebel yell: On
- Free elections: Off
- Immigrants out: On
- God mode: Off
- Difficulty: 211%

Custom avatar:
- Farmer
- Communist rebellion
- Hardworking
- Patriot
- Compulsive gambler
- Paranoid

On the beginning of the game everything was fine. I build clinic on the beginning of the game (obstetrics mode) and later on hospital (obstetrics mode), church, cathedral. I also used contraception ban edict. Population was growing, very slowly, but I have more and more people. Maximum happiness was 63%. Between year 2025-2030 there was maximum number of population 143, then it started to drop. I notice that there was less and less children. There was a lot of young (about 20-35 years old) people, but they was almost all single. Even those with different second names (no relatives I presume - I don't know how the game works), but they was not marry. I have build a lot of (enough) apartment blocks and houses. Minimum wage was 14. I have double rations edict and still more then enough food. I don't know what goes wrong, but people just didn't want to multiply anymore or even marry.

Maybe it's some kind of bug or just impossible to have high population without immigrants, I don't know. The year is 2042 and population is still dropping (134). There is 23 (was more then 43 in good times) children and 3 mothers and a lot of single people and more and more retirees. I'm tired now and I will take some break.

How the hell can you only have a population of 143 by the year 2025?!?!?!?! You must surely be doing something terribly terribly wrong to have a population number that low.......

Please please please, for the sake of your Tropicans, PLAY THE TUTORIAL, as clearly there are some major flaws in your gameplay technique!

Also, please read the game manual, as it will help you to find out why your gameplay technique is failing.

it might also be good for you to look at the islands that other players have made.

EDIT: I just noticed that you had 'immigrants out!' selected in sandbox mode. This would go a long way to explaining your problem.....

Original Tropico and Tropico 2 player. Keeping the Military Junta going strong since 2001.

RE: how can i increase my population?
1)If you have a llama flu outbreak, no imigrants will enter your island except specialist.
2)You have to wait for a frieghter for more immigrants.
3)limiting the number of workers in certain buildings will force them to take other jobs. I always limit the garages to one worker until they are servicing over 1000 cars.
4)If you have a secluded area away from any food sources you might need a market there.
5)You can hire the max amount of specialist possible to add people who'll have to work somewhere.

Build an Immigration Center _immediately_, and set it to "Tropico first!" Keeps out the riffraff and allows only the foreign specialists to enter.

[Kind of intriguing, actually. I'll have to try a sandbox game of this. LOTS of cash/citizen to spend. Do a sllllooooowww build towards a tourism economy. Hmmm.]

An Immigration center is always the first thing I place. It's rather unusual for an island to generate without any high-school educated women, but it is rather common for them to be fairly old on generation. They can also be killed by hurricanes and earthquakes through no fault of your own. It is not uncommon that you will not get to a high school in time to get many teachable years out of her, so putting her in an immigration center is by far the next best thing.

I usually go for "Open-door immigration", though. Even riff-raff can work mines and chop trees.

You could also set your hospitals and your clinics to the "Obstetrics" option. It makes it 50% more likely when a family member visits a doctor that they will have a baby.

Inadequate food and health care will keep your population down. I can rarely get my pop over 100 w/o a clinic. But I usually only start with 30 people.

When a tropican need to go somewhere, he will consider how long the trip is, and if going to the nearest garage might provide a faster way to get there.

So yeah, there is a sort of max range for them, beyond that the citizens will just walk to their destination as it will not be able to save them time fetching a car. But the distance is flexible, the garage ignored when going to work on a nearby farm, will be used when that same tropican needs to go across the island to visit the sports arena.

Regarding lack of workers, if you find yourself in a bad spot regarding food, healthcare and workers, consider asking for aid if you have the diplomacy building (it does not need to be staffed). the 5 year aid camp should be time enough to sort your issues.

If that is not possible, block employment at non crusial buildings, so people will be forced to work on your farms, if you are out of money, food and healthcare at the same time, you have usually overbuild, and since you wont be building anything anytime soon, your construction offices should be the first to stand empty, followed closely by your teamsters.

Do you have farms making food, to supply the marketplace?

The number 1 thing I've found to attract immigrants is open jobs. Even without an immigration office, if you build three brand new farms in between boats, you'll notice a sharp increase in migrants on that post-farm boat. Now, that won't be nearly enough by itself to fill all those open spots, but that is where 'open borders' comes in.

The same theory holds true for students. Tropicans are naturally drawn to high schools/ College when they see open job slots that are unfilled. If you plop down a power plant and like 4 tv stations, you will notice that every single slot in your high school has suddenly been filled by females.

Dropping a factory will create a glut of students (of roughly equal genders) in the high school.

So just think of open unskilled job slots as being the pulling force for your immigrants, with 'open door policy' being a multiplier on those who would have come naturally.

Garage workers have nothing to do with servicing cars or the effectiveness of your garage. They are teamsters, same as your teamsters office, they move products to factories, dock, marketplace, etc.

to play with "NO immigrants" you must use the edict ban contraceptives. But it will take ALOT of time for the children to "AGE". and therefore there is very LITTLE you can build. unless you import workers (college / high school only).
