What is this?
I'm curious what this is supposed to be. My guess is that it's one of those giant African ant hills that I used to see on the Discovery TV channel.

In the game there are almost always a flock of seagulls (Not to be confused with the 80's pop band) hanging around this. This should tell me that it has something to do with a body of ocean water but I don't see that here.

Your guess?

Your guess?

It looks to me to be an incidental coding error in the map formation algorithm.

RE: What is this?
Does this occur on a randomly generated map or one of the preset ones?

It seems the game just generated a very oddly shaped hill for you. I reckon it would have turned out as one of those elevated plateaus, but the size was so small that the actual plateau is missing. I'd be interested to see the settings used for this island.

If you are interested - I've had a couple of those things and a few similar as well. Never bothered me and I've considered trying it out as a point of interest for tourists? I usually play in the sandbox as seen below with a display setting of 1600 x 900.

RE: What is this?
I can remember that I had a massive ring of mountains form on one of my sandbox maps, and the area inside it was inaccessible. The shape of it looked like a volcano, but there were trees and wildlife in the centre of it........
