Ok good.. .I was wondering the same too...I haven't been able to play because of the original disc not found error so I've read the manual over and over and there is a reference to not losing your serial key...

Ya, mine is asking for a Serial number for activation and I can't find one. I'd like to play, any tips?

RE: Missing Serial Number
There is no Kalypso-published version that requires a serial number or activation.

Sounds like you bought the Russian version.

Yes, it's also needed for the Map Editor beta.

RE: Missing Serial Number
This would seem to be an oversight. Aren't I supposed to be able to register this game on Stardock? ...which would require a serial number?

I'm also the lucky recipient of the unable-to-detect-original-disc error. I want to know, "Can I exchange this thing at Gamestop?" If it is just a few unlucky people getting a few broken discs, it would seem to be a reasonable solution.

"Or is the error endemic to my machine?" (actually, I can answer that last one myself, but I'm not sure a positive result implies an answer to the first question)

Note: We could actually play this game WITHOUT a disc by using Stardock if you had bothered to include a serial number.

Very Stupid IMHO.

Missing a game that actually works! Bugs galore even in the pirated version, I bought the game and can't even install it WAY TO FRIGGIN GO!

srinivassa, I'm confused. When you say Stardock, do you mean you got if from Impulse? If so, I did the same on release day and didn't need a serial number.

Smile RE: Missing Serial Number
For all those who are keeping tabs, exchaning the DVD for a new one makes absolutely no difference. Neither does trying the install on a different computer.

Honestly, I wouldn't even complain about waiting for the patch except that I really thought D3 would make a GREAT game to play while waiting for SC2. Since, I'm going to commit to SC2 when it comes out, I won't even be playing D3 for quite a while.

Given the popularity of this series, I would have been better off waiting for it to go bargain bin and saved $20. Since I have to wait until after SC2 comes out to get a working patch.

Yeah, basically what I am saying is that if you downloaded the game from Stardock/Impule, it would work. Usually if you buy a game that is registered with Stardock (like D3, D2, GalCiv, Political Machine), but you buy the actual disc. There is a serial number present in the physical packaging that allows you to register the game with Stardock.

Any game registered with Stardock can be played with your account login on any computer any time. You never need a disc.

My point being that if they had bothered to include a serial number to allow us disc purchasers to register with Stardock, this grievous error would be completely surmounted.

Very stupid not to since it would have taken them what? Less than a week? To generate 30,000-50,000 GUID's and register them with Stardock and print out stickers to put on all the manuals. Why they would not do this when every other PC game does is so beyond me!

I was however expecting a lot of problems at launch. Virgin game developer with beat up spent license. I was expecting bugs for at least two patches. This kind of inoperability is not even unheard of. What is so freaking stupid is that all they would have had to do was include a damn serial number! And I would have been playing this for several hours already.
