Patrician IV Bug Reports Thread (Version 1.3 only!)
Hi!

I can understand your point. My argumentation was lead to slightly different way, because of the fact that pirates has always been a part of the 'Patrician' series an a part of the RL-Hanseatic League.
A huge lot of gamers don't have any problems with piracy; quite the contrary - they love to fight the pirates. An annonymous quote: "It would be damn boring without pirates!".
I don't want to know how many of them never even took a look at this board, because they didn't felt that annoyed by pirates.

We are putting a lot of emphasis on the community and our fan base. We had a demo, several beta versions and so on tested by 'old patrician addicts' (some of them have been beta testers scince Patrician I[!]).
The result: We brought you the possibilty to set activity to low, not to turn them off (regardless of functionality). This option can be used at ANY time of the game! (Furthermore, didn't I mentioned that modding (tests are running; don't ask me for a date) will be available for interested fans?)
Game configurability is just one of many aspects (seems to be the most important to you). Kids, older people and people who never even heard of 'Partician' before have to understand the game.
We're even getting some fan mail, telling us what's historicly correct and what's not. Usabillity, difficulty, historic accuracy and many many more factors are important. ...and don't forget that every studio got its limits (man-power, release dates, buget and so on).
Put all these facts together and objectively see, that P IV has a plenty to offer.

BUT, it important to get your feedback and therefore many thanks. We will keep your point of view on our mind Smile

Best regards,

Daan

Just a few comments:

1) This thread was a bug-report thread. Now it's turned into another "I don't like the current naval combat system and GM have to change it"-thread. Of which we already have enough.
Pitty.

2) I'm not a fan of the current system and I most likely never will be. Personally I prefer the way naval combat is being fought as is shown in the games "Commander: Conquest of the America's" and "East India Company".
However since the current system is part of Patrician IV, I have two choices. To keep my mouth shut and accept the way it is, or to keep complaining about it as a spoiled little brad, hoping that whining eventually gives me what I want.
Frankly speaking, I'm too wise and too old to be the latter, so I decided to be the first.

3) I see comments mentioning that the system in P3 was easier.
It wasn't actually, the only difference is that the AI in P4 has become smarter.

In P3 the pirates tried to capture your fighting ship at all cost. That could be exploited by firing one salvo at the pirate and flee; while your merchant ships sailed into another direction. The pirate would try to encircle your armed ship with two ships; which would fire upon you to damage you, offering the 3rd ship the possibility to board you.

In P4 the AI pirates have a simular mission; except with a major difference. Not to eliminate the escort "at all costs".
So they stay at a distance, use solid shot only to destroy your ship and try to avoid your salvo's. A human player wants to capture the ships and the goods, thus have to take a bit more risk. Which is exactly what the AI pirate is waiting for. All in all it's making manual combat harder as it was in P3

4) As Falko already pointed out in another naval-battle thread; training captains is cheapest when you have a low rank. If you want to train a captain in fighting, you need to pay quite a sum to do the last two steps.
There's however a nice exploit available (as I pointed out in the same thread) to train a captain for automatic combat up to level 5 without lacking the money.
One of the early promotions requires to have 25 workers. So all you need to do is avoiding building any industries, but invest the money in ships instead. Extend your trade routes until you're making quite a sum a month. Use single ship (snaikka / crayer) routes as Pirates tend to leave those alone.
Next you select a captain with high sailing skill, send him to Reval and train him in fighting until he's managed to get to level 5.
When that's done, assign him to a hunter convoy, made of Cogs and Crayers (50/50).
Repeat this for a second captain, just make sure he doesn't get too many ships to keep expenses low.
The moment a pirate shows up, you're able to send a hunter fleet at him. The number of ships and the amount of cannons as well as crew tells you what ships you can expect. Create a war fleet of either Cogs or Crayers and attack the pirates. Chances are big you'll win the auto fight.
When your second captain has had his full training, assign him to a trade route and train the next captain. When all your major routes are protected by captains with high fighting skill, build that industry and get promoted.

5) Pay attention to your chronicle. The moment it shows that a certain city is under siege by pirates you know you need to fight there. That's giving you the choice to do that fight manual or automatic; both with their advantages and disadvantages; or to avoid that city with your convoys.
Single ship convoys or convoys with lots of guns keep pirates away. If you don't want to fight a battle by hand or at auto, use multiple convoys to supply the same city. It'll cost a bit more, but at least you're certain you'll be left alone.

Ooohh! , 'Daan Hugo' , but that seemingly is what you fail the most to see.
I can see that P IV has a plenty to offer , and never said it had not.
Why else would I "sign on" here to have this discussion with you........
However with the lack of proper (lower) difficulty settings with respect to pirates then I think that the cons outweigh the the pros far too much for me to enjoy the Patrician IV game.

Mr. Thorin Oakshield speaks of "keep complaining about it as a spoiled little brad" (which Brad would that be? , Pitt? Wink ) , which certainly is not what I have been doing. The world functions this way : unless you motivate people to fix or alter things then they are probably not going to do so - so ofcourse I have written here because I wished to try to motivate you to make some improvements - however that ought to be obvious.

Since Mr. Thorin Oakshield strays off topic then I would like to say that with a little fixing then Patrician IV would be a far better game than both "Commander: Conquest of the America's" and "East India Company".
I got both these games also.
The "East India Company Collection" is very heavy loading, saving and running + it got bugs that the developer has no intention fixing (As this has been discussed in private conversation between me and the developer I will not comment further on that either!).
I have however found the "East India Company Collection" entertaining to some extend.
The "CCoA" got a much better game engine than the "EICC" it runs smoother and I haven't seen any of the bugs from the "EICC", after the initial excitement (first couple of hours of gaming) then I however find the "CCoA" a total bore. Nomatter how many colonies you smash or take over then more pops up (the companies seemingly does not quit as they did in the "EICC") and the potential micromanagement of the "CCoA" seems endless.
Of the two then I think that the "EICC" is the better game on a poorer game engine.
Also the "EICC" will run your ships on rocks even in "arcade mode" - I mean how stupid is that.

However the Patrician IV is , as game, completely out-classing both the "EICC" and the "CCoA" (not that those can not have their own charm - I spent many hours playing the "EICC" ) and with some good will and some effort from Patrician IV makers with repect to a lot greater possibility of configuring game difficulty (yes the pirates) then it could have been one greatest trading games on the market....

With repect to the Patrician IV game , then I am sorry , I do not consider the Patrician IV game to be a historical simulation game though it has some of those elements and are inspired from real life history , so my opinion is : "For Pete's sake , it's just a game" so I don't care if it is not 100% historically correct, as long as it keeps the game world as of that period (I mean no high tech and UFOs for me there) .

I consider the Patrician IV game a trading and city building game first and foremost (and that is what I like about it) - but perhaps that is were I fail......

anyway , Mr. Thorin Oakshield or no Mr. Thorin Oakshield , I will keep wishing for a game publisher made MOD or fix with respect to the, yes , pirate difficulty in the Patrician IV game......

With kind regards

Hi!

Thanks for your contructive critism!
(even though it is a bit off topic, I'm trying to give you answers...)
Patrician_Player Wrote:I can see that P IV has a plenty to offer , and never said it had not.
I don't wanted to assume that, I just wanted to mention it, to explain that 'Patrician IV' didn't had as much man-power, time for development and so on as several other games with comparable(/less) features.

Furthermore, I think many P II (P III) fans wanted the features they enjoyed (and everyone has different things on his/her mind). We knew about this and discussed it (even before release) with the community and the beta testers. For some people 'Patrician' is only about trading, to others it is the politics or the piracy or whatever.... Anyway, the gamers goal is still the same: Be as successful as you can be. ...and we leave it to the player so he/she can decide how.
We tried to delever that by using a more modern ways to be a little more contemporary.
To bring you more than that (in your case settings and options) more time/man-power/ect. would be needed, so we concentrated on the features you can enjoy now (I guess Tongue ).
But, we'll always listen if someone of the community has ideas to improve 'P IV' and we appreciate every mentioned thing (regardless of 'good' or 'bad' content). Thx again!

However, (to find the right way back to the topic) the things you mentioned are mostly (feature) requests and no bugs. So, we shoud move the discusson (if anymore is neccessary) to another topic.

Hi,

Im having serious problems with this game in terms of speed. It runs so slow that there really isn't any point. Scrolling and clicking on things seems to be where the main problem is. It takes a good 4 or 5 seconds for anything to work after being clicked.

I have windows 7 with a pentium dual-core T4300 2.10 GHz and I have 4GB of RAM. I have the latest directX.

The menu location works fine, it's just ingame. I would give my graphics card details but i have no idea where to find it.

can anyone help?

cheers

Run DXDIAG
Press the Windows Start Key & R - together - or START MENU & select RUN

Dialog BOX will open

type in DXDIAG - the Direct X Diagnostics tool will open

press ENTER or Select "SAVE ALL INFOMATION"

save the file in a .txt file

Copy into a post BUT

please enclose in formated code (#) and (/#) using the "insert formated code" selection on the post editor, but with [].

When you have done this - I would suggest that you check the file yourself your graphics card is displayed under Display Devices.
I've put in an extract from my DXDIAG file.
Then go the manufacturers web site and check you have the latest drivers installed.
BUT it maybe that you have 3D set on your card - Patrician 4 does not support 3D.
You should have a graphics configuration application that came with the card -
AMD (Catalyst Control Centre);
NVIDIA (NVIDIA Control Panel);
If you INTEL Integrated Graphics - see below.
Look for 3D settings and select the "Let Game/Application Decide - Option.

First thing - go here ---> http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchRe...set+Family

There is a later driver version available.
Then check the 3D thing. - It looks like you have 3D enabled.
Other things to check :-
Did you install the DirectX 9 when prompted, you should have a Folder:-
c:\Program Files(x86)\Kalypso Media\Patrician 4\Direct X - if not reinstall the game from scratch.

Also worth while running Windows Update - if you haven't got it set to automatic.

Doesn't DirectX 10 (Vista) and DirectX 11 (Win 7) provide all of the DirectX 9.0c functionality (plus more advanced features that are used for Vista and Win 7 programs)?

Yes - but some applications /game require the Direct X 9 files - not sure if this game does BUT the copying of DX9 files is the last stage of the installation process and indicates a clean install.

be glad that the game runs! After reading your dxdiag i would bet, it would not run! Onboard graphic with only 64 MB Ram dedicated memory is nothing you can use for gaming.
check the graphic options and set them to the lowest. maybe this helps to run the game more fluently...

Did that ages ago but it doesn't work and after trying all thats been suggested, it still doesn't run any faster.

That isn't the problem. Integrated Chipsets work that way - everything shares - in this case there is 64 Mb dedicated but the graphics will "borrow" the on board memory up to 1600 Mb - it's a trade off but it usually works pretty seamlessly.
Smaller form factor mobile devices are going down that route.

Upgrade the chipset driver, turn off 3D. Run Windows Update. If there is still a problem do a full reinstall.
Still a problem.
Then do another DXdiag and post it.

I've just started re-installation. I upgraded the driver yesterday but the 3D thing is bugging me as it doesn't seem to give me an option to turn it off. Now i know why this laptop was 75% off! Tongue

I've only had limited exposure to the later Intel Integrated Graphics BUT
Go to Control Panel | Appearance and Personalization | Display | Screen Resolution | Advanced Settings | Troubleshoot, "Change Settings"

or
Go to Computer | Manage | Device Manager | Display Adapters. Right click your display adapter and choose Properties. Go to the Driver tab. Click the Disable 3D button NOT the Driver itself.

First way won't let me change setting because it needs admin despite my account being the admin and the second way, the only disable option was for the whole driver. Bloody HP.Tongue

The option under XP and Vista was :-

Start | Control Panel | Personalization (or Appearance and Personalization I Personalization) | Display Settings | Advanced Settings | Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator Driver tab | Graphics Properties... | 3D Settings.

it could well have changed in Windows 7, if that option isn't available try looking --->
http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect/graphics
and let Intel decide what you need.

Failing that :-

It maybe because you are using 3D - try restarting the machine in "Safe" mode and look if you have the option then.

Yeah the button is there but its greyed and cant be clicked on but t does have the symbol which means an admin may access.

what it actually says is "If your current display driver allows you to change settings, click this button to troubleshoot problems with your computers display"

This bit i could get to but the problem is once im there, no off button. I've got a three way choice for preference as to whether it favours performance, Quality or is a balance of both.

Or i can have custom settings in which i can change Texture Quality, Anisotrophic filtering, vertex processing and vertical sync.

Things to try :-
- unplug the USB Mouse and test with the "TouchPad" only.
- is that better - then update you USB mouse driver or firmware (Especially if it's a "Razor" mouse.)
- same result slow - plug in the USB mouse in and try disabling the TouchPad.

Check the HP support site for updates to your system -->
start here ---> http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Lookup?h_...+PC+series

Finally try running the game and then look in Windows Task Manager to see if there is any other process / applications running that are using a lot of system resources.

I know that, but that is very often the problem. Min. requirements mean 256 MB dedicated RAM! Wink "Borrowing" the missing RAM from the mostly slower board memory is not a good solution for gaming. In this case it can be nearly half of the board memory...
That works for Office, Internet and also watching movies, but not necessarly for gaming.

I found one and a half bugs. Wink

1) The Expedition trades are supposed to allow me to sell more and more goods each time that I hit the city, right? So once I get up to 5 stars, I am expecting a larger amount to be sold. However, when I bring 250 or 2,500 of an item, I still only sell about 200 goods per Expedition trip, even with a 5-star city rating. I also read in the game manual that if we bring too many goods than are necessary, the price is affected negatively. However, this has not been the case. All that happens is that I sell about 200 goods (185-210, give or take) and return with the remainder plus the goods I bought from the Mediterranean town.

1.5) The mod tools do not work for the American boxed version of Patrician IV, which was a major reason why I bought the game in the first place. Without the ability to mod the game, I will be forced to return it due to a lack of interest in the title, as well as remembering this for my next video game purchase opportunity from Kalypso. (To note, I will not buy any games from Paradox Interactive, for example, as their customer support, forums, and unresolved bug problems won't have me risking my money like that. I am hoping that Kalypso instead makes Patrician IV: Conquest by Trade at least as moddable as Patrician III was. It is the only sensible thing to do at this point besides patch up the game further.)

Thank you.

Hi!
That is definitely not correct. Have a look at the modding thread, you got an answer there (sry, I can't reply that fast, but there some kind of time difference between Europe and the U.S. Tongue ).

Regards the bug #1) Did you sold only the same commodity or different?

Kind regards,

Daan

I brought 3,500+ of pitch and 3,500+ of Metal Goods to an Expedition city with 5 Stars. When the Expedition came back, it had only sold 195 and 201 of each, respectively. This is all that I have been able to accomplish with Expedition trading so far, even with multiple attempts. Not sure if I am misunderstanding something... as usual.

I have had Expeditions where nothing was traded, even with 5 stars in the Mediterranean town. I tried bringing less with me (like 400 of the two resources), and still nothing got traded.
