I just found the max leader level while in the first misson of the Elv campaign. After the fact. I noticed my leader hadn't leveled in ages so the next battle I looked at the XP afterwards and saw my leader got 0.

So max is 5 for the 1st mission. D2 always would say somewhere that the leader was at max but D3 doesn't. I just hate wasting XP when I could build up another veteran instead.

So what is max for each mission? Then I can sort of plan ahead.

I just started, but so far it has moved in 5 level increments with each mission.

That makes sense, thanks. I had gone to the 2nd mission with all my vets at level 3, only to find out I could buy a level 3 leader for 500 gold or buy my level 3 veteran for something like 1,300. I figured if the game was screwing me I'd just start over and build my vet higher than 3.

Yes, it´s in 5 level increments up to level 30/35 in the 6th scenarions and the final elven campaign scenario.

Take enough runes and transferable items with you in the later missions to sell at scenario start to be able to recruit your veteran leaders early in the mission.
Recruiting them becomes quite costly later on once they have reached a reasonable level.
