Fire!
Maybe a very silly question but how do I put out fires...

I looked around for buildings with such an description but I have yet to find one. Maybe it would be a decent idea to cover this in the tutorial as well?

RE: Fire!
Only Prefectures can put out fires. Now for the stock game, you must build a school, research Prefectures. Now to Build a Prefecture building, you must first of have built a Forum.

Now here is the catch that confuses people, only Equates can staff a Prefecture building. So your going to have to do other things to get Equate housing. Your Insulae plebs must produce goods when their food satisfaction is above 50%.

Have fun. You'll figure it out.

I use a small mod where I can employ Prefects using Plebs, but that is cheating...

RE: Fire!
unfortunately there is no building to prevent fire.
Also fire are too scripted.
to often fire occurs where it's difficult to build prefecture. In fact fire are scripted.
for example in 'the fall of spartacus' fire occurs always in the 2 iron mine.
if you build a prefecture near those mine, that will triger fire directly at the prefecture.

Fire is not scripted at all. It happens because of crime or riots. Insulae will generate crime when their food satisfaction is below 30% (15% when the people in the insula are employed). Equites require food and entertainment and patricians require all their needs above 30% (again if employed this turns into 15%).

Prefectures will put out fires in their radius but rather slowly (1 building every 60 sec, if I recall correctly). The other effect prefectures have (lowering the upkeep of all buildings in their radius) is much more important.

RE: Fire!
it is quite an ordeal to staff the prefecture (in the demo anyways as Pi-X stated) so the simple way is to not "allow" buildings to catch fire. make sure they are staffed and producing their goods and they won't catch fire. also, get the demo patch which is supposed dumb down the incidence of fire.

RE: Fire!
I found this in Cheats.lua

I do not know how to activate in game. Maybe just type in with - or start rome.exe -cheat
too lazy to check it out. Game is too easy to cheat. Big Grin

-buildall
-giveall
-playall
-knowall
-knowestates
-talented
-levelup
-winall

Of course nothing to stop fires I see. You could hack the game..I made a "Plebeian Prefecture Mod" that allows a simple pleb to staff the firehouse. Or just make the burn time forever.

You have to go fairly far back to get to a stage where there was no organized fire fighting effort. In Rome itself, one or more Legions were detailed for the sole purpose of fighting fires and performing night patrols for the discovery of fires. So having the prefects fighting fires is not an outlandish game abstraction.

Cool

Sounds quite logical. And in real life, atleast today, you don't really interfere and run past the firefighters into a burning house, you sort of expect they know what they are doing.

Besides, lets face it, people in general are stupid bystanders who hardly stop to help someone with a flat tire (re: cart-wheel) Smile

RE: Fire!
Fires? C’mon take time to learn the basics – the idea is to build a sound city and by doing that you avoid the risk of any fires. I’m almost done with the game without a single building catching fire and without a single prefecture (except the scenario they ask you to build several). Now back the ‘almost’ – the game is so easy and so repetitive that it gives another meaning to the word BORING – so I just left it... without any fires.

I don't understand. Are you saying the game is boring or that it got boring towards the end?

RE: Fire!
I can agree with maynard for a part, the other part is probably a case of opinion.

After some trail and error, you understand how the game works.
The punishments for those erros maybe a bit harsh, fire in one building,
and by the time you know what to do, the next 4 buildings are burning too,
frustrations comes in to play, and people hit the quit button.
Those people are not worth it.

When you know how everything works and manage to build a city without any complaints from the citizens, you have actually done all thats possible.
Sure, you can build another city, make it more beautifull than the last one, which generates more income and holds happier citizens. But thats not enough for some of us, they wanna keep trying new things, build other buildings that he couldnt in the beginning, keep expanding, the its-never-enough kinda thing.

I dont play free build missions because of that, to get every one as happy as i want to, i would need to build every building, just for them... now there is nothing left to build for me.
The community already agreed on the lack of decorations, mainly pavement. But after about 30 missions played, ive seen everything, and already know what i have to do, to get something and then im still not satisfied as i was before.

The speed in which this proces takes place heavily depends on the person in question.

Where it was a sweet thing before to work up to build a circus maximus, its now something regular. I was amazed by my first theater, and what it did, now i got theaters all over the neighborhood.

Personnaly im still having very much fun with every missions i can play, less then it was, but thats with everything offcourse. (riding a rollercoaster for the 50th time aint no fun anymore)
