I have no (My Documents\Ceville) folder so there are no logs in there despite the (Ceville\logfile.txt) claiming that's were they are stored, the only "Ceville" folder anywhere on the PC is the game folder itself.
This PC already has .NET 3.5 and the VC++ redistributables and Dx 9c, and they presumably installed without a problem with the game since there was no error and nothing was canceled any of the times it was installed on either PC.
Have you guys tested if having the "My Documents" folder elsewhere, the root of another drive for example, causes any problems with the game? It's caused problems for applications before.
These inconveniences are understandable, downside of the PC platform and having so many variables, I was just really looking forward to it, looks like a really cute and entertaining game. It's just that I have a bone to pick with the way PC games are going, in so many ways for so many reasons.
A bit of a rant from here so most may want to skip it (Sorry about hi-jacking the thread for a moment)
Sorry if I seemed obnoxious about the game using system directories to store things, though I apologise, if so, I'll still moan about it yet again. I'm sorry but for every argument I can think of in favour of using the %User Name% etc paths I can think of a downside, but I can also think of many reasons not to use them that have no counter.
For example.
Hogging space on the OS partition (especially when a vast partition or drive is being dedicated to games and other things)...
Backups of the OS partition Acronis/Ghost/Zilla (add space to that one aswell)...
Potential complications, you're giving up control, it's one more thing that can go wrong causing trouble for your users (thus more support time waisted) while there isn't actually a bug in the game itself, other than bad design (comparable to games that require a registry key or the launcher will display "Install" instead of "Play" despite the game still being on another drive after an OS format for whatever reason, if all games had that users would have to reinstall every singe game unnecessarily when something like that happened)...
Loosing save games/settings etc when restoring the OS partition of it it crashes or is otherwise wiped...
Future compatibility, any guarantees that
all future Microsoft operating systems will work with this approach or even support it, some older games that don't work on a newer OS, don't work because they relied on something OS related that's been dropped but would have been fine if they kept it simple and kept control over it...
Keeping things simple is the best way to go for so many reasons, having a "Users" folder withing the game folder with sub directories for separate users and within them a "Saves" folder and "Settings" folder, well that's so simple it hardly needs to be explained and avoids so many potential problems. As does using an absolute minimum of the registry because an ini or cfg file works perfectly. I hate it when patches won't install because the expected registry key isn't there anymore and how many people have used some tweaking program only to have it remove a seemingly useless registry key preventing an otherwise perfect game from running.
Sorry about the rant, it's just that game developers are doing more and more overcomplicated things. It's almost as if they're thinking, the more "sophisticated" (complicated) I make this the better I am, when some dead simple, often tried and tested alternative, is far more robust.
Ps, Another thing that can make me want to pull my ears off is when games have thousands of little files causing disc performance to decrease, taking up more space (because of blank cluster space) and hogs the MFT causing it to expand and thus defragment further degrading disc performance. For heavens sake I wish they would put all their crazy little files in a container zip etc (with zero compression if that makes them feel better). Sorry I'll stop there because I could probably write an essay or short book on this nonsense and obviously not all of it is directed to Ceville and I don't mean to offend. I'm just rather passionate about it and annoyed at how PC gaming is "apparently" going downhill supposedly because of piracy etc when the reasons are painfully obvious when looking at it from the users perspective.
/rant, I'll sit quietly in the corner now
