Question BETA?
Is Kalypso/Haemimont running a Closed Beta for Tropico 4?

Or perhaps a better question: was there a Beta for Tropico 3 and did anyone here get into it?

I'm not surprised that a more niche city-building game like Tropico doesn't get a well advertised or flashy Public Beta, but obviously the game has to be put through its paces. I'd be surprised if this was limited to an in-house test, as that seems hardly sufficient QC for a product, especially one in which fan input and feedback is supposedly welcome.

So can anyone speak to this?

RE: BETA?
I think same as they did with T3, the devs are confident enough not to rely on outside testers.

Yes! There was a closed Beta for which one applied and was selected. A lot of the selection had to do with one's computer specs. There was a very serious "non-disclosure" agreement involved. It was so strict that only a few people even hinted, let alone admitted, that they had been involved after it was finished.

I did not participate, but I got the impression that the testers had no communication among themselves - they communicated only with their "handlers" at Haemimont.

At this late date, I seriously doubt anything could be learned from any of those Beta testers, even if they could talk and were still here posting.

RE: BETA?
The testers were able to communicate with each other. Google finds the application and agreement is still online. I hope there's a Tropico 4 beta, keep an eye out for it!

Thank you first-time poster 'dingbat' for the correction.

In spite of chagrin, I never (really) claim an infallible memory - so corrections are welcome, even if embarassing.
