The frelling Lubeck fire *started* in the fountain. I've got one fountain for every 8 buildings.

The larger issue is that before I got to Chairman, Gdansk, Oslo, and Aalborg all burned to the ground -- no buildable building left standing. I've brought Aalborg back, Gdansk rebuilt itself, and Oslo is still a wasteland, some 2 years later. (This does not mention the other dozen fires since then which didn't entirely decimate any town). I'm having a hard time seeing how this is improving gameplay.

On the other hand, RoaD does have improved sea battles, although it seems unfair that while the pirates have learned to turn and dodge, I still can't get my gunner to put a round where I know the pirate is going to be. If the pirate is turning when I fire, the gunner still puts the round where the pirate ship would go it if continued on a straight heading from where it's aimed right at that instant -- meaning the only time I can hit anything is when I either get so close they can't dodge, or when I entice the pirate to sail in a straight line while I bombard him. It can be done, but it would be a huge improvement if we had the choice of when to fire, with an indication of where the cannonballs would land if we fired right now, or if my gunner could at least learn to recognize when the pirate is turning. I know, it's not a simple problem.

ShyMay or may not be a bug, but the Lords msake outrageous demands that are virtually impossible to fulfill. For example deliver 100 barrels of mead in a town with no mead and no honey. You would need to send a convoy all over the map to comply and you will run out of time in the process. This should be made much easier in the future.

Small Graphics issue. See Image
Berlin is shown on the Game Map without a wall - yet the town view shows a wall. - Better view if you click on image.

@ayanac: Select your fountain and be sure that the coverage is at 100% Wink
You want to have vidid cities, so you have to care about them.

@Cohnman5: You only got 1 of 9 pieces of that map (in this case the upper left piece Wink )

@billyplod: The icon is refering to the town size Wink

Some minor errors I just ran into:

When a town gate is smashed by the besieging troops:

1) the wheels of the battering ram show the ram moving forwards, while the ram moves backwards instead.
2) When the troops have reached the townhall, they enter it through the wall, instead of going up the stairs and use the door, or using one of the side-doors.

And a general one:

At some point in the game, the church bells keep going after a minute or so of silence. Even when the world map is opened these bells can be heard.
It might not be a bug, but it certainly is bugging me.

I play Patrician 4 without any problem but with RoaD it crashes.

The game start correctly but after entering cities a couple of times the graphics get strange and the game eventualy crashes when clicking a city. This happends after visiting a city between 2 and 8 times.

The same problem occures on both HD3200 and HD3870 graphics cards.

All drivers, bios and Windows Vista has been updated.

Have you tried to lower the settings of the game?

It may sound silly, but sometimes you need to play a game at lower settings as your gfx-card is able to handle.

And another thing, posting your DxDiag helps a lot.

The 3870 is the "better" card well above minimum spec for the game(s). Concentrate on that card and do a DXDIAG with that card and the latest driver installed.
It maybe worth checking that your system meets the requirements for the card
http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/g...ments.aspx
and that you have the latest driver for your version of Vista

I have tried all settings, lowering the settings has no impact at all.
The system meets all requirements for the card.
As I said, everything is updated. In fact the game bahaves best on the HD3200 card with a 3 year old driver (but still crashes).

A bit more detail: The event video's don't show, only a black window (except on HD3200 with old driver). When leaving a city the screen is blue for half a second. Very often there is sea everywhere in the city.

In many way's it remainds me of problems that where present in both Patrician 1 and 2 but was all fixed in Patrician 3.

I am currently travelling so that I don't have the 3870 card available but here is the dxdiag with the 3200 card. The only difference is the graphics card, screen and keyboard.

Hi!
Your issues might caused by your graphics card. Is it a 'Notbook-gfx-card'? How does the 'Shaded Memory' behave?

Regards,
Daan
Reply
I'm not sure what 'Shaded Memory' means.
The problems are the same with external PCI-E graphics card. Also, I have no problems with any other games on the external card that do not run on the 3200 card while Patrician behaves the same way on both cards. Also note that Patrician 4 without RoaD runs without any problems.

I think that Daan means "Shared Memory".
Your graphics card uses the main PC memory as well as on board card memory. This works reasonablly well in most situations but "Vista" is a "resource intensive" operating system.

Looking at your DXDIAG file your card can use upto 1135MB for display, it has 316Mb of dedicated (on board) memory and it can borrow (share) upto 879 Mb of main system memory.
Your system memory is 2270MB - now VISTA can use about 1MB of memory just in idle mode, no applications - then what you have left will depend on what processes you are running (Virus Checker etc.....). The way to check is to use "Resource Monitor" to see how much memory you have available.
Guide here -->
http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/ho...nitor.html
Check with and without the game running.

If the machine is short on memory then you will get graphics issues - black screens for Videos because there isn't enough memory to render the whole picture.

Your machine will take up to 4Gb in total (2x DDR2 PC2-6400 with a maximum of 2GB per slot).

I have seen elsewhere in the forum that shared memory can be a problem but there is no way to turn it of. Even with the 3870 card the same amount of shared memory is used.

What you say is true, and the computer is short on memory.

What I don't understand is why Patrician is the only game that has a problem with this and why it can't accept the swap file as everyone else.

You don't want to turn it (the shared memory) off, that's the way that that it's supposed to work. It's a "laptop" thing - the "form factor" - size of the box is smaller - less material used and less power requirements, less heat output - in the end cheaper.

Swap files are only used for "inactive" applications or processes. The active memory location contents are writen to disc and that frees up physical memory for active applications.

Graphics rendering is an all or nothing process - a few bytes over the available memory and it doesn't work. The only way to check is using resource manager.

With Vista it's worth while adding memory in any case.
Even if your using 32bit Vista you will get around an extra 1GB of usable memory - 64bit then you get the full 2GB.

Remember that Windows is not USING all this memory you see in resource manager. It's used for low priority cache. As soon as the game request memory Windows will make it available.

Don't tell me that graphics in Patrician is more demanding than Fallout, Battlefield etc.

Thank you for the help.

Hi patFan!
Every notebook card is different and it seems, that yours has little problems with PIV regarding the graphics memory... (kind of overflow?)... We can not provide the compability to every notebook(!)-card.
Furthermore, you can't compare PIV and games like Fallout or BF, because nearly every game has other priorities of processing (CPU or GPU). A game with a 'better look' doesn't have to use more of the GPU's recources.

It's been several months since many of these posts have been made, including mine about the Balance reports. Is a patch being worked on or just in the planning stage?

I have tried all settings, lowering the settings has no impact at all.
The system meets all requirements for the card.
As I said, everything is updated. In fact the game bahaves best on the HD3200 card with a 3 year old driver (but still crashes).

I would suggest an upgrade to Windows 7 64 bit which is a better and more more stable operating system. This will help with Pat 4 ROD and everything else that you do. The cost should not be a problem under $100 or under 60 Euros.Big Grin

Hi!
PIV and PIV:RoaD have to be from the same source.
Sorry for telling you, but your versions will not work together.
Before purchasing the expansion your download portal shoud have gave you that hint! You may ask them for a refund... Anyway you need to get PIV and PIV:RoaD from the same portal to get them work together.

I have noticed a bug with the Convoy list, that I couldn't see anyone else post about.

With the convoy list open, and a convoy already highlighted, clicking on a different convoy doesn't select the new convoy. Instead the map seems to recenter on the already selected convoy (behind the convoy list window). After clicking many times, the new convoy is eventually selected.

Here is a video of the bug: Convoy List bug

I see...
it's a refreshing problem. you got a lot of convoys and nearly every second something happens and the list refreshs. Try to pause the game if you want to use the list, that shoud help.

Hey all! Just want to say I LOVE the game! Patrician IV was just way to easy for me on professional so I downloaded the ROAD expansion in hopes it would be more challenging. (from the same site, D2D)

Only issue I had from Patrician IV is it would lock up after an hour or two of me playing. (It always locked up a few minutes after an event would happen and you get the cutscene in the top left. The catch is, it would always be black! So I knew when to save my game and restart the game)

The expansion however, is unplayable! It's starts up just fine, loading screen is great. Main menu is great! When I actually get into the game (free play only since the Campaign is just way way way to easy) All of my menu's in-game are missing the background on them. The text is missing on the menus as well. I change the resolution to try and fix the issue. (the city also disappears but changing resolution fixes that) After changing the resolution 2 to 3 times to fix the menu issue's the game goes into a window mode and locks up in a black screen and I receive the following error:

.Resources/IndexBufferManager_Dx9.cpp(86) : Error in 'Render::IndexBufferManager_Dx9::onUnload' : Vertexbuffer lock failed: 8876086c

I have my dx.diag but I can find a spot on here to attach it.

Thanks for any help! I got a three day weekend and would love to waste it playing the expansion lol.

PS. I have reinstalled my graphics drivers.
PSS. When I start a game it runs SOOOOOOOOOOOO slow, but after I change the resolution once it's flawless. Very weird. (changing resolution higher or lower doesn't matter)

That doesn't sound like a normal behavior :/
Please send your DxDiag to support@kalypsomedia.com with the subject 'Patrician IV - please forward to Daan Hugo' and describe the problem as detailed as here. Do you using a notebook? Tried to lower the res? Latest patch installed? Wich version? Ever tried windowed mode?

@Varien
This could be a "paged memory" / Virtual Memory problem. You haven't enough virtual memory allocated to record all the graphic buffer locks.
You’ve updated all your drivers - so just check that you haven't got 3D set on your graphics card - P4 doesn't support 3D - you should have it set to something like - "Let application decide"

Then run Windows Update
Defragment your hard drive because the Virtual memory file runs best in "Contiguous" memory - not fragmented.
Then check for free space on your disc - you will need space for the virtual memory file.

Then check to see what settings you have on your machine. - The two links below will tell you how.

Typically having it set to "Let Windows decide" is best, but it may be worth setting it manually to "Minimum - 4x your RAM - installed memory" and setting the maximum to half of your free disc space"
The page file will only use what it needs.

E-mail sent Hugo.

@billy - Your links are no good I think. I changed all the settings on my graphics card and no change in-game.

Important part:
Quote:The command to place on your boot.ini is “/3GB”.

Try this and you shouldn't have this problem anymore Wink

Alright, i'm understanding the part where I have to put the /3GB in this boot.ini file.

I've found the actual "boot" file in c:/Windows/Boot There are 5 or 6 boot files in 3 different directories. None of them have a .ini at the end. And there all bootmgr.exe and 1 boottest.exe

I try to open them but it says I dont have the program for it.

Thanks again =P
