Naval base and Air base ?
A Naval base and air base would be nice. Having your own ships patrol your own waters and the Airplanes,Jets, and Helicopters ruling the skies . Which can discourage foreign intervention from invading your island. Maybe a Space Agency would be interesting for Tropico. Wink

I agree, I have always wanted an air force and navy. Particularly, given it is an island, a navy, which should deter gunboat diplomats. However I see no use for an air force, much as I would like one, unless there is an addition of an enemy who you can attack/be attacked by without instant defeat, perhaps pirates, although this problem occurs with the both navy and air force. I think a space agency is a step rather too far for and island such as Tropico, though I suppose an island capable of WMDs shouldn't have too much trouble. Though if such a building were to exist it should take decades of research, would be worth merely to see a rocket take off? By the way welcome to the forum, and congratulations on your'e first post!

A navy would do nothing to stop a potential aggressor with access to aircraft carriers. The only thing that would make them think twice about invading would be a large airforce with modern enough planes to threaten their own fleet.

I was thinking purely in regard to the fact that a large army acts as a deterrent in T3, although Tropico could never wield a large enough army to defend itself against the yanks or russkies in real life. It is simply an extension of the existing mechanics of the game.

If Tropico can start back in the year 1925. The superpowers will have to deal with the great depression. Aside from that there will be three super powers USA(Capitalists), Germans/Italians(Fascists), and the Russians(Communists). If Tropico had a powerful navy and/or air force it is plausible that they can defend themselves. The super powers will be too busy with themselves to even consider invading a island with a powerful navy because it will cost a lot of money and time to do so. The CIA nor the KGB was not around until after WWII but the Abwehr (German Intelligence Agency) was around before WWII. Foreign Military advisers could help your Generals/Admirals and Sailors/Pilots gain skills and tactics. It can be possible.

I read somewhere that Tropico 4's islands is 4 times bigger. More land means more industry, people, room, etc, etc, etc. So it is possible that Tropico can have a huge military to defend there island. Which can discourage superpowers from invading but only in the Great Depression Era and depending if you have the military modernization edict on possibly the cold war.

the fascists really didnt give a shit about the rest of the world in the sence of foreign aid. so the only influence would be the possibility of pissing off the loyalists enough that the germans invade.

Yes! El Presidente wants an air force and navy. It's illogical to have a WMD, but not a navy or air force?

I support this idea as well.

If we have hot air balloons & zeppelins, why not helicopters or jets?

As for the navy, I mentioned in another post how cool it would be if there was an added Pirate dynamic with the rebels, where they would cruise the coast and raid your tankers or coastal tourist/industry buildings. Until you built up a gunboat navy/coast guard, you would have no defence from these attacks and they would steal lump sums of revenue (depending on your level of development).

It'd be so awesome to see Tropican-flagged gunboats patrolling the coast and firing on pirates!

You know, this is the first post that makes a good case for navy. An island navy could not stop USSR or USA, but it could be good for Piracy and rebels. Possibly to prevent emigration as well? Keep people from hopping in boats and swimming away, if you catch them you can either jail them (if you have a prison) or let them return to normal life.

Thanks seasnake!

I've also advocated for some immigrants to arrive by flotilla or make-shift raft. I think it would look hilarious/amazing (and also more realistic than everyone arriving via commercial freighter). This could work in reverse for those trying to leave Tropico and your mini gunboat navy/coast guard could serve as a great enforcer for "absolutely NO immigration" or an "open doors" policy.

Yes, another good idea. Prevent illegal immigration, as it were. Legal immigrants can come on the freighters, but without them illegal immigrants can just come on makeshift boats, rafts, etc. Your coast guard gives you a new immigration policy. Pretty slick to see those systems interplay like that.

Rolleyes RE: Naval base and Air base ?
If T1 had more appropriately used an upgraded Port building to provide Seaplane air connections, then the land Airport could have provided a war-surplus prop-driven trainer to loop the island to strafe the Rebels. Jets and helicopters - ha! Not until the franchise hurtles forward into the new, fantasy century.

I supported the Lighthouse building concept as a base for a "pseudo-life saving service" which could patrol at sea like the Policemen do on land. Its main function would be to give El Presidente a better ride when he has to escape the island on short notice.
